Interview AIBU

I have a final interview for a prestigious, demanding job this week. It's in a different country to me.

The organiser asked for my availability and I provided several times, including 11pm and 7am slots.

They called me today to say that the only available time is lunchtime for them, which is 4am for me. I explained it is suboptimal but there was no other option.

Does this bode ill for the job?

Depends if you’ll be working from home. Seriously, it shows a lack of inclusion which may be indicative of the culture.

JellyBabiesFan · 26/04/2021 23:09

Might be a test. If the job is demanding they might see how you react to a demanding situation

Plus if you are unwilling to get up at 4am for an interview. Are you really willing to move to a whole new country?

I once had to schedule an international interview for 3 am for the candidate. He was being interviewed as a comparison as they really liked candidate 1 but needed to at least speak to 2 candidates.

Push back and tell them that's unreasonable. You can do 6 am but no earlier.

You'll get your answer if they're a bit more accommodating.

I wouldn't read too much into it, particularly if it's a panel interview of three or more people and / or interviewers are senior. Getting diary slots to align is often a pain.

PlanDeRaccordement · 26/04/2021 23:15

I don’t think so....and I moved to different continent and six time zones away for a job.... it’s neither good nor bad. Doesn’t bode ill or well.

  • If they are very interested in you, then there will be not just your hiring manager, but the next manager above them in the interview and to be honest, their availability will determine interview time, not yours.
  • Are 11pm and 7am your time during their time zones core business hours? If not, then again, you being the only one in your time zone should be the one flexing to accommodate the interviewers time zone as it makes sense to inconvenience one person instead of several persons.

I'm willing to do it and it is with a senior partner, so it's understandable.

I have interviewed with others in this timezone before and the time has always been reasonable, so I guess it's an anomaly based on seniority or a final test.

Bring on the 3am espresso 😁

How did the interview go @ThePriceOfSugar?

nancywhitehead · 04/05/2021 10:08

I wouldn't want to work for a company that expected me to attend an interview at 4am. I'd be worried about how they would treat me and their expectations once I am in the job.

ThePriceOfSugar · 11/05/2021 03:46

Thanks for asking! The partner apologised on behalf of the recruiter for the time of the interview and complimented me on my dedication. They emailed me after and said they are getting an offer approved. No celebrating till its signed though!

Lovely news. Congratulations.

Belledan1 · 11/05/2021 07:35

WelI done OP. Agree its people's diaries. If there is 6 people on the panel its a nightmare trying to get dates especially if high up people. I know perhaps this shldnt happen but in my past experience when I organised things like this you get a browny point if flexible and you obviously got them as well as coming over well.
