Why cant we keep our name??

Just noticed this advert under 'Sponsored' on Facebook. So the website describes itself as an 'Entrepreneurial Women Group' - so why take away our name ? I am so sad - I feel it is taking away our identity. This is not inclusive - because I feel excluded. How has it come to this ?

Disgraceful. This is so extremely regressive I can't believe people think it's ok.

I am a woman.

I am a woman because of my sex.

Gender does not exist. I am not a stereotype.

I'll say this until the breath runs out my body.

Toseland · 26/04/2021 20:51

This is awful - so disrespectful to women. I was really upset when I heard Brighton hospitals were using a term ‘chest feeding’ and not using Mother or Father. What can we do?

But man have breasts😳 That's dumb.

It's like stop calling hair hair, because women usually (not always and smae applies to breasts!) have them longer🙄

Such BXLLXX innit 🤷‍♀️

But men can get breast cancer.

Very confused.

Huh? No idea what this thread is about

ViciousJackdaw · 26/04/2021 21:29

Christ almighty, this is a 70s second wave or radical feminist idea. Probably has something to do with Shulamith Firestone. I'm going to look it up to check, you may wish to do the same.

I've tried to read up about it but I don't get who it is offending

FizzyApricot · 26/04/2021 21:37

Other than people who want the word "men" in women. Is there anywhere that spells it out simply so I can learn?

lunar1 · 26/04/2021 21:40

For fucks sake, won't someone think of the dyslexic among us. My brain wants to explode at that word and cannot process it at all. I'll just stick to woman, or at a push, adult human female.

Back in the 70s, there was a new wave of feminism. Women in this movement decided that the words 'woman/women' reduced them to little more than a subset (and therefore less important) of man/men. So they wanted their own term. They changed the spelling of the words and 'womxn', 'womyn' and 'wimmin' can be seen in feminist literature from that period.

Lately, transwomen have claimed 'womxn' as their own. I presume this is because there are strong objections to TW describing themselves as 'women'. However there are feminists to this day (and I believe they would call themselves 'radical feminists' but someone please correct me if I am wrong) who still use these spellings too.

This being MN, all some people can see is 'TRANS TRANS TRANS' and are not stopping to consider the history of the word.

We don't know why the advert in the OP uses 'womxn' though. Perhaps they are feminists too. Maybe they want to be trans-inclusive. They could even be both.

DdraigGoch · 26/04/2021 21:55

I'd message them to point out their obvious typo.

Lancrelady80 · 26/04/2021 21:57

I'd assumed the x was because of the x chromosome ... males are xy, women xx.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 26/04/2021 22:21

Do you have citations to show “womxn” being used in the 70s? I remember “womyn” and “wimmin” but not “womxn”.

blacksax · 26/04/2021 22:51

I don't mind it. Except maybe they got the spelling wrong and it should be:

Womxxn.

Grin
Weeedonkey · 26/04/2021 22:54

I have a trans work colleague (man to woman) and she hates this womxn stuff, she just wants to be called a woman. Do trans women in general actually want this or is it the performative woke making this label and decision for them?

Weeedonkey · 26/04/2021 22:55

Also I’ve not seen mxn anywhere! I think that speaks volumes.
