To ask when do you get rid of clothes?

I've always thought clothes should only be thrown away if they have holes in.

But it takes a long time for this to happen, which means I have quite a big wardrobe. And then it's hard to justify buying new things. And I would like new things sometimes!

YANBU - only get rid of clothes when holey
YABU - have regular clear outs

I used to keep everything now I bin it / tip it or take to charity shop whatever gets it out of my house quickest

Pedalpushers · 24/04/2021 19:56

Depends if you wear them! I chuck out if I've not worn it since the last time I cleared out...

TiniestFluffiestBunny · 24/04/2021 19:56

Charity shops will take anything you no longer want in good condition. Heck, they'll take stuff with holes and sell it for rag.

At the moment, look for bigger charity shops with more stock space, though.

WorriedMillie · 24/04/2021 19:59

I mostly have leisure type wear, that gets relegated to mucking out wear, so clothes last me for ages. Anything moth eaten then gets recycled
Quality stuff I go off/surplus to requirements gets charity shopped. I have a bag for life on the go for the whole family and when it’s full, I drop it off

Pinkflipflop85 · 24/04/2021 19:59

Yabu. Have regular clear outs. Charity shop/cash for clothes or recycle through h&m/asda for vouchers.

Planningobjection · 24/04/2021 20:01

I used to him stuff with stains and holes then a friend who works in a charity shop said they sell the stuff that’s unsellable so now I donate everything regardless of condition. Not underwear. I have regular clear outs 2-3 times a year.

Sparklesocks · 24/04/2021 20:01

I wear most things for as long as possible (until they get holes, wear out etc) and then I take them to the clothes/textile recycling bank.

If I go off a certain item before then and it’s still in good shape, I’ll donate to a charity shop.

Proudboomer · 24/04/2021 20:02

I tend to have a good sort out once a year. Anything I haven’t worn in months goes to the charity shop and tatty stuff goes to the cloth bank to be recycled.
With everything being shut for so long I am due a sort out and then I will replace any bits I need like T-shirt’s and underwear. I will only buy a new outfit if I need it for an occasion and I have nothing suitable.

LongIslandIcedT · 24/04/2021 20:03

Regular clear outs, not worth keeping things that aren't being used. I keep a bin bag in my wardrobe for items I'll not wear again.

romdowa · 24/04/2021 20:04

I usually donate stuff that I'm sick of wearing or not wearing if it's in good condition. Anything that is in disrepair I either bin or cut up for rags.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 24/04/2021 20:06

Things go very out of style (although I care less about this as I get older). For me I've found my shape changed post kids, also the styles I feel suit me at 35 are not those that suited me at 25 - less flashy etc. My lifestyle has also changed, I used to wear more smarter things but also more "going outy" clothes, now more casual/athleisure. So things have been chucked/given away because they just don't suit me/my lifestyle any more.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 24/04/2021 20:06

I recycle every bit of cloth we have. Old underwear and holey stuff goes to the fabric bins at our local dump.

Sparklesocks · 24/04/2021 20:08

It sounds like you might need a good clear out OP. Doesn’t mean you need a brand new wardrobe but might be good to offload stuff you don’t wear as much.

priccey · 24/04/2021 20:08

I take mine to the oxfam bin outside the supermarket once I no longer enjoy wearing the item.

Thelnebriati · 24/04/2021 20:08

If its a favourite thing then holes don't put me off, I'll patch or embroider round them.
Anything I decide I can live without, I sell on eBay or donate to a charity shop before its worn out and let someone else get some use out of it.

GhostCurry · 24/04/2021 20:20

When it’s no longer fit for purpose, which includes

  • if it no longer fits
  • if it’s noticeably dated
  • if it’s faded/bobbled/stretched/damaged
  • if I don’t like it anymore.
BrilliantBetty · 24/04/2021 20:27

I get a big bag and go through my wardrobe and everything I no longer like put in the bag. It sits in my car for 1 week. If I haven't thought about any of the items/ noticed they were gone(!) it all goes to the charity shop.

I do this 2 or 3 times a year. I hate having too much stuff, I need to be able to see what I've got. Though I still have a few adored bits from 10+ years ago.

Clothes with holes, bobbles, snaggy bits, straight in the bin.

Sunshinedrops85 · 24/04/2021 21:30

I haven't bought any new clothes in a year, and for the previous two years before it was only two items. I still wear holey items just at home.

I donated two large bags of stuff I no longer wanted.

ViciousJackdaw · 24/04/2021 21:41

If it's got holes or otherwise faded/damaged, I'll cut it up for rags or take it to the CS for their rag bag. If I've just gone off it then CS. Which is where it came from around 70% of the time.

Mylittleponysuperfan · 24/04/2021 22:10

I buy from charity shops-but donate back at least twice a year
That’s the rule in our house-we always have a black bag on the go
I have my favourites that I buy from and the others I donate to
(After I donated my sons baby clothes once and found myself,a week later looking for ‘new’ clothes for him but there was only his old stuff to chose from)

HeadNorth · 24/04/2021 22:12

I just got a massive hole in the arse of my favourite training leggings - sadly to the bin they go. Otherwise, charity shop what I haven't worn for 2 years.

BramStoker · 24/04/2021 22:16

I go through my wardrobe at least once a year and clear out things I no longer wear and take them to the charity shop

I have very limited wardrobe space and simply don't have room to keep everything until it falls apart. I do have things that I've owned 20+ years so I'm not averse to hanging on to garments until they fall apart if it's something I really love and/or can see myself wearing again but I am quite ruthless if I know I'm unlikely to wear something again even if it isn't that old.

carlywurly · 24/04/2021 22:18

I try to get rid of stuff when I have something, or perhaps 2 things I go to in preference before that thing.

So running leggings, for example - have kept 2 pairs of sweaty Betty leggings and the rest are gone because I wouldn't choose them first.

I still have way too much but I'm getting there. I eBay in fits and starts, but eBay isn't the friendly place it used to be. I increasingly just charity shop things to get them gone.

beginningoftheend · 24/04/2021 22:22

When various things happen:

I hate them - to the charity shop
I can't wear them any more for some reason - to the charity shop or into storage in the loft
They look tatty - recyled for craft projects usually

Holes in my favourite clothes get fixed so that doesn't mean they get thrown out. I have regular clear outs - but I really don't buy very much each year, only a few new items I think. This year I have bought more as I needed lockdown clothes!

girlmama32 · 24/04/2021 22:22

If I haven't worn something in a year I usually get rid, if it's in good condition I will sell it online if not it goes to charity
