Things you used to buy but now you don't need to

I used to buy coloured card for my children to draw on and make things with, now I just use the card in cereal boxes.
-paper- i just save letters for them to use the other side!
We were about to spend god knows how much on more module pots for seedlings, until I saw a video on YouTube where someone uses toilet paper tubes! Genius!
I used to buy lettuce bags and spinach bags for salads. Now I have a long plant pot on the windowsill and I havent needed to buy any for 2 years. So easy and grows all year round, same with spring onions!

Things I never missed once I stopped buying it
-foil
-cling film
-baking paper
-kitchen paper
-craft items from hobbycraft or poundland. I save so much money from making things with the kids instead of buying it all. I would never do that now! And the craft time we spend making the craft supplies is so much more fun than the actual activity we end up doing

has anyone got any more?

I don't line the tin. I flour it lightly. - for bread that is.

oohmyback · 23/04/2021 22:15

I have never bought kitchen rolls, I have a basket of cloths under the sink and once used they go in the machine with whatever else I'm washing. I do use foil but only for non dirty things like sandwiches so I can collect it up and recycle. I do have some washable sandwich wraps too. I have an extensive Tupperware collection for fridge and freezer.I very rarely use foil for cooking!

I have baking paper but used to have washable baking sheets but lost them when we moved 🤷🏻‍♀️

Use a cup and washable pads.

Dedicated face wash. I use simple soap now - for hands face and body. My skin is just the same and my wallet much better!

Laundry Detergent - read an article in a Saturday Newspaper from a Laundry 'Guru' a few weeks ago. I was desperate and read anything.

The Laundry Guru was quite correct - put a tablespoonish of powder in the drum with the clothes for 45mins at 30degrees and, hey presto, clean clothes! Why I didn't know this before....the clothes come out cleaner and fresher than using more detergent and power.

Tampons
Hair dye
CDs/LPs

Angelica789 · 23/04/2021 22:41

Chocolate bars. Can’t remember the last time I bought something like a Mars bar or Snickers to eat as a snack. I used to do this often but now find them too sweet and sickly.

Cotton pads for face, I crocheted a load of them instead. They work so much better than cotton pads

I read this article too and was far to sceptical about that working with my hard water to ever try it. Also, he’s American. What do they know about our British washing machines and detergents? They all have top loaders and non bio isn’t a thing. Totally different proposition. Could lead to some very unsatisfactory outcomes and I am not prepared to run that risk.

Wrapping paper.
Have used old fabric (eg pashmina, fleece blanket) to make fabric bags and bought some cheap ready made ones. Mainly did it to reuse and environmentally friendly, but actually think the biggest bonus is the ease of wrapping everything.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 23/04/2021 23:00

Crayfishforyou what do you use to crochet the pads with. I think I'd really like to do this - DD and I get through sooo much cotton wool. What do you do to keep the holes nice and tight? I haven't crocheted for years and only did a basic blanket, but I reckon I could pick it back up again.

Teaandscone · 23/04/2021 23:04

Kitchen roll; this is washable. I just drop the used sheet into the washing machine instead of the bin.

Nappies and sleep pants (kids fully toilet trained)

New bottles of cleaning and laundry products, shampoo, soap etc (I use a refill service)

Face wipes, cotton wool (I use washable bamboo wipes)

Magazines (especially those dreadful gossip ones)
Children’s magazines
Ha to the 5 video type ones-definitely not

TheLODstinkyunderpassAKATits · 23/04/2021 23:34

Magazines - I have an app called Readly on my tablet and get all my magazines and newspapers on there. DH and two friends also use my account so saves us a ton of money and paper!

I'd like to find a washable sub for cotton wool for removing eye makeup - can someone recommend anything?

Florabritannica · 23/04/2021 23:34

Cleaning products - make my own from vinegar and bicarb.
