School run logistics question

Got our school place confirmed last week, and I have to figure out the logistics of getting DD1 to a school 10-15 minutes away - which is in the opposite direction to their current nursery, which DD2 will still be at for another two years. Nursery is about 30 minutes from the school, about twenty from our house at my walking pace. I can't drive (and I REALLY can't - I've tried. I'm a hazard to human and animal life, and to private and public property. I shouldn't be allowed to try again. "Learn to drive" is not a helpful suggestion here.) I work three days, but my parents will do after-school for us one day.

She's going to have to do breakfast club - there's no way round it. But there are two options post-school: she can go to after-school club, I go get DD2 from nursery at 4.30, trek to the school to get DD1 and we all go home. Or I go and get DD1 at 3.15, we come home and she watches telly/does drawing/crafts till about 5 then we both go get DD2 from nursery and all come home.

I'm averse to putting her in after-school club if I can avoid it. It's a heck of a long day and I'm not sure she'll like it. But then I'm not wholly confident she'll get on with crafts while I work, and it's a long trek to the nursery and back for her (would need her to go on balance bike or scooter for it to be feasible).

Thoughts? AIBU to think a five year old might do a quiet ninety minutes of colouring two days a week? AIBU to think she can manage a forty/forty-five minute round trip on a scooter? AIBU(and overly precious) to want to avoid ninety-plus minutes of after-school club?

Haven't RTFT but I did want to say that in my experience the years where you have kids in both nursery and school are logistically the hardest.

It's not going to be easy but won't last for ever.

Everyone told me to have them close together and I thought "nah, want to have a bit of a break between babies". Could have had this to juggle for one year rather than two! 😏

I should say that it wasn't my experience, just what I gleaned from other parents (both my children were in full time nursery from a young age).

I have 10 years between mine so I feel like I've been raising kids for ever!

I think after school club twice a week is more enjoyable for child than coming home but having to entertain herself while you work.

If boss is flexible could you work 4 shorter days and pay for an extra days nursery for dd2?

Hankunamatata · 22/04/2021 22:59

OP if you cycle, you could have dd1 on a tow along and dd2 on baby seat. 15/20 min walk takes me 5 mins on my bike

Silversun83 · 22/04/2021 23:00

I presume DD2 is in a pushchair? Could DD1 go on a buggy board to save her the walk/scoot if she's too tired?

(If you go with that option).

jakeyboy1 · 22/04/2021 23:06

I'd go after school club all the way. It's only a couple of days - appreciating she may get tired. I have to prise mine out of the place.

Hankunamatata · 22/04/2021 23:08

Or you could have bike trailer for 2 kids. They would be kept warm and dry (even squeeze in a tablet for entertainment lol)

FeelinHappy · 22/04/2021 23:13

Depends on your school but at ours I would ask for 2 days of after-school club and hope to be offered one.

The bike sounds like a good idea if that's an option. You wouldn't have to use it every day but might be handy when you are running late or to break up the monotony.

In YR we did an afterschool childcare swap with a friend who worked different days. It worked really well and, I think, was easier on DD than after-school club. Both went on the ASC in Y1.

*on to ASC
