To think new ne CCTV is intrusive? (pic included)

New neighbours next door had cctv cameras installed last week. There are 6 camera I can see, but only this one looks directly into my garden, dining room and sunroom. The others face elsewhere and are no problem.
I took this pic from my dining room window of the offending camera.
I’m quite uncomfortable with the fact it appears directly trained not only into my garden but on my window.

Aibu and what can I do? Haven’t met the neighbours yet, don’t want to be an arse about it and get off on the wrong foot, but I’m really rather annoyed. Attaching a pic.

Don’t know what happened to the title, should read ‘neighbours’

I bet it looks worse than it is and neighbours have no intention of looking into your garden, its just that it's new, if your concerned perhaps ask to see the picture so you can see what it covers.

I have cctv, about 10 houses could say im looking in their garden, but in reality it looks at my back gate and dh work van.

WilsonMilson · 22/04/2021 13:45

Perhaps it does look worse than it is, and I’m sure they don’t intend to, but nevertheless it still appears to be looking straight in the direction of my house. Dread having to have a chat about this with people I’ve not met yet, but really quite uncomfortable about it.

Realistically if you want to find out you're going to have to knock and ask to see what it covers. Those globe type ones can sometimes look like thryre directly pointing at something but the camera inside is looking in a different direction.

Alwaysandforeverhere · 22/04/2021 13:52

Is it a dome camera? It could look like it’s pointing in your garden but axstilly be looking down at the ground between their house and fence. Pop around and ask about that particular cameras view. If not happy get a pcso to pop around to check.

WilsonMilson · 22/04/2021 14:01

Yes, it’s a dome one so difficult to know exactly what it covers without asking to see - which is a bit of an awkward conversation for a first meeting, but I think better than getting a PCSO to pop round which is a waste of their resources and might seem a bit aggressive.
Going to have to ask them, hope they’re reasonable.

I mean, don't start a war but they aren't allowed to record your private property without your agreement. That's my understanding.

zoomier · 22/04/2021 14:09

What's on the other side of the fence? Parking space? It'll be looking at that.

GladAllOver · 22/04/2021 14:10

We have cameras all round our house but they are arranged not to look into neighbours rear gardens because that is invasion of privacy. They do look across front gardens, but can't see anything that is already visible from the road.
You should ask your neighbour to confirm that the camera doesn't see into your property.

2me2u2u2me · 22/04/2021 14:13

is there a way you could find out who installed it, maybe there's a signe up somewhere and then call and ask them, just a thought if you don't want to approach new neighbours, I don't think I would like to either.

Magnificentmug12 · 22/04/2021 14:16

It’s illegal to have a domestic camera pointing off your property. It’s also illegal to have one pointing on someone else’s. We have a camera for our drive, we had to ensure it didn’t reach the neighbours garden, her kids play there, so it’s angled down.

Magnificentmug12 · 22/04/2021 14:17

Didn’t matter her front garden can be seen from a road by anyone, you can’t hold recordings- it’s illegal.

BashfulClam · 22/04/2021 14:35

It looks like it’s angled down to film between the house and fence area.

shouldistop · 22/04/2021 14:36

I think it looks like it's filming down the way

WilsonMilson · 22/04/2021 14:54

Hopefully it is filming down the way on to their drive, I might try to get a closer look. I can count 6 camera just at the front and one side of the property. Can’t see the back or other side. Seems a lot of surveillance for what is a very safe and quiet area, but each to their own I guess.

I think you'll find it looks worse than it is. Our cctv looks like this on the side of the house and it literally only covers my garden areas within my fenced boundaries.

Jennifer2021 · 22/04/2021 15:08

The thing is you never know why they have it installed people could think this if you drove down our street in the middle of the day. On my days off in recent weeks I've witnessed the police nick a burglar at 7am in the morning and my single parent neighbour on the nice side had an attempted break in and had to get an alarm fitted. We'd just made some expensive purchases before having the system installed and saw it as extra protection too.

Jennifer2021 · 22/04/2021 15:17

It’s illegal to have a domestic camera pointing off your property

Not quite. It depends where it's pointing. If it's pointing in to the neighbour's hot tub area or her enclosed garden then yes correct. If it takes in part of the street or a public path then It's not technically illegal as there's no expectation to privacy on a public area. Having said that though if there's part of the footage that captures images off your property like passersby on the school run then you are I'm told required by the ICO to register as a data controller for a small fee and you have to comply with requests for footage of others when requested. There are fines for not doing so. OP if they're new to the area they might not know how safe it is?

B33Fr33 · 22/04/2021 15:24

That's a shit ton of surveillance for a private property! Is it for a trading standards sting?! I'd definitely ask about any cameras appearing to have a shot of your property.

Alwaysandforeverhere · 22/04/2021 17:14

You don’t need to register for domestic use only for business we where told and the police have made use of ours and other neighbours cctv many times.

We have multiple cameras as long as they catch my own land/public land and I display signs I’m fully legal. I can capture neighbours private land with their consent.

apooagnuandyou · 22/04/2021 17:19

not really, if you have a couple, you might as well get a few more, doesn't cost more.

We have got the same, mainly used to follow the local cats and foxes roaming around Grin , but means each side and each window is covered.

Burglars generally aren't considerate enough to stick to the front or back where the main cameras are!

Elieza · 22/04/2021 17:47

I’d ask them nicely about the cameras.

“Hi I live across the back from you and I see you’ve got a great cctv system installed. I was wondering if it can see into my property? I wouldn’t want my morning face and burst couch bed hair to put anyone off their breakfast (tinkly laugh). Would you be able to show me what area the back camera covers please? Sorry to be a pest”.

If you do it like that surely nobody can accuse you of being nasty!

There’s plenty of time to be nasty in future if it turns out they are filming you.

ihavethehighground · 22/04/2021 18:21

Invasion of privacy law

Jennifer2021 · 22/04/2021 18:42

There's no invasion of privacy if it's not capturing the OPs enclosed property.

Jennifer2021 · 23/04/2021 14:13

Yes that's what happened here. The installers covered all points of entry. One of ours on the back covers our back door but the NDN wrongly assumed it was covering her yard because of the angle it was pointed at. Just as a pp said it catches the path leading up to the back door and the windows too so it is pointed at a specific angle.

The police were called in our instance - happily showed police the cctv feed and they were content all was perfectly legal.
