Step daughter has asked for a mac book pro for her 18th (around £1200) i understand its a special birthday but it just so much for a single present. Just interested to see what others have bought for their children's 18th birthday? Did you go ott? Was there one main present?

Cannot remember for the older set of nieces and nephew, probably jewellery for the girls and money for the boy.
My godson got a leather wallet with his initials on it for his 18th. He'll be 21 this year and the plan is to give him a tie pin and matching cuff links.

Dd got a car. Bought jointly with grandparents

Ds got a Macbook Pro (he wanted it because he's studying music and it takes his specialist software) last Xmas with the proviso he only got a token present for his 17th birthday.

A ring, and extended family dinner in a posh restaurant.

DDs got Tiffany infinity necklaces for their 18th and fabulous watches for their 21sts.

Laptops feel like a necessity nowadays, not a special gift.

My main gift at 18 (currently 23) was a subscription to a cross stitch magazine Grin

We got dd a car 🚗 & a Pandora bracelet for her 18th. We only spent this much as it was a special birthday. She’s about to be 19 & she’s getting a dry robe.

On my 18th I was given a pretty necklace (approx £50). My parents later paid for me to go to University so I'm not complaining as that held far higher value for me.

I will probably pay for driving lessons for my eldest and insurance on my car as she's already keen to learn, three years to go. Then support to study at University.

We got DC1 a laptop for uni, spent about £800, he uses it a lot (engineering course) plus an engraved hip flask cost about £80 so he would have something to keep long after the laptop is no more. Plus we passed on savings that relatives had given him plus we had added a bit to round it up, so probably another couple of hundred there as well.
I got a Sony stereo for mine 35 years ago. I found the paperwork years later and it cost £350. I couldn’t believe it as my parents didn’t have a lot of ££. It was also a reward for hard work for A levels - not results as my parents didn’t believe in paying for grades, but rewarding effort. It actually lasted (the main part of it plus a later CD player that slotted together with it) over 20 years.
