I've made my son (a teen) a birthday cake
I've covered in white fondant and realised he's had blue stars on it for 2 years. I need to do something else. But it must be easy to get at Tesco. Can I / should I plant something in the fondant? I did a candy cane one as my Christmas cake. Easy but looked good. Pattern in the fondant? I have letters and numbers. Can buy whatever Tesco sells ! Hit me!

Etsy is your friend, I've just bought a cricket cake topper - search for cake topper UK, you can get custom ones and WhiteHouseFarmCrafts just sent me one v quickly

A big bow like a wrapped present, hundreds and thousands, friends son had cartoon google eyes all over (white oval icing with black dots). Looked fun.

singtanana · 21/04/2021 22:32

How about using strips of fondant as ribbon to make the cake look like a present? More fondant for a bow and a little gift tag with his name on. Bit like this...

Another layer of green fondant on top to look like a footy pitch? You could do that with buttercream also.
What is he into?

singtanana · 21/04/2021 22:32

Cross post with pink...sorry!

JaceLancs · 21/04/2021 22:38

How about a pizza?
White fondant base - jam for tomato puree, - foam sweets like mushroom and shrimps - you can get bacon shapes etc
Grated white chocolate to represent cheese

FangsForTheMemory · 21/04/2021 22:45

Caterpillar face?

Feelingconfused2020 · 21/04/2021 22:47

Does he have a hobby or favourite film or something with a logo you could replicate out of sweets/chocolate?

MrsBDarcy · 21/04/2021 22:54

Ooh these are fab. Keep them coming. I need to make it tomorrow so no time to order anything - got to be stuff they have at Tesco or Sainsbury's

Chocolate fingers around the outside tied with ribbon (or kit kat fingers) sweets/chocolates /malteazers/chocolate orange to fill the top or just have the contents of a box of chocolates on the top arranged nicely and ribbon around the side. I like someone's suggestion of googly eyes all over the cake and I am pretty sure I have seen them for sale somewhere.

jellybeanteaparty · 21/04/2021 22:58

Fangs - love that idea very topical.....or seeing he is a teen perhaps a chrysalis cake you could cover in white candy floss!

What does he like? Favourite food?
Nando's chicken?

LettyLoman · 21/04/2021 23:00

Pile a load of sweets, chocs and biscuits on top - artfully arranged of course. Look on Pinterest it looks easy.

caringcarer · 21/04/2021 23:04

You can get rolling pins that you don't roll over top of fondant icing, that leave a very decorative pattern on top of the cake. Quick and easy. I did my dd a butterfly one. Then added a few edible butterfly's.

MiaMc · 21/04/2021 23:10

What shape is it?
Would you be happy to get some ready made icing to make stuff with?

doubleshotespresso · 21/04/2021 23:26

Could you do this ? But some chocolate footballs inside the centre so it's fun when cake gets cut?

doubleshotespresso · 21/04/2021 23:28

I hope this works!

I think for speed and ease I will do the pizza or the sweets on top. He loves all kinds of mints sweets and Chinese food - not suited to cake decor though! Grin
Chocolate wise he eats it ALL He is a teen after all !

a friend is well known for his lack of baking skills but wanted to make a lovely cake for son's birthday.
It came out, with both sponges together, about four inches high😀
As it was to be displayed at his party (pre covid)he was so embarrassed he ran to the corner shop armed with Cadbury chocolate finger biscuits which he stood to attention all the way around the edge, then did a horizontal row followed by another upright for and the centre,or too of the cake was carefully crisscrossed with more biscuits!😀.
Everyone admired the big cake but were puzzled when nobody, including the birthday boy,was allowed to cut into it!..so,if needs be op.....

FeelinHappy · 22/04/2021 10:01

@Karmastar 4 inches is a perfectly normal height for a 2 layer cake surely?!
