I was born in Country A, but have been offered an opportunity for a working visa in Country B with an opportunity for residency at the end. Both Western, been on holiday to Country B. I don't particularly like Country A and have always wanted to immigrate, but I know it could be a 'grass isn't actually greener' situation

Country B has a better standard of living, much lower housing and living costs. I can live pretty much central in the city in Country B for what the same price gets me in boring suburbia in Country A. Country B's suburban neighbourhoods are way cheaper.

In terms of job opportunities, the market is crowded but doable in both. Arguably the city in Country B offers more opportunities, as the market is a bit better BUT I'd be a foreigner which might make it a bit harder. I'm currently training in my role and completing the next stage in Country B is about 10k cheaper.

Am I BU to just pack it up and move at the end of the year (when the visa would start?) I'm 27, no kids, and worse comes to worse, can come back to Country A after a year or two of experience if it doesn't work out Grin Worse comes to worse would be my career being fully qualified gets delayed a bit, but nothing unbearable and I've already done the first stage (initial qualification)

I lost my 'gap year' of travelling to covid and I'm desperate to have some fun whilst I'm still young and have no commitments like kids- And there's the potential for PR if I like it! I don't have a mortgage or anything like that.

Am I crazy? I have distant family in Country B, but not my close loved ones!

It's definitely worth a couple of years if you have wanted to emigrate. The worst that happens is you learn about yourself. Good luck.

Hoolihan · 21/04/2021 21:59

No brainer! You should definitely go.

MaskingForIt · 21/04/2021 22:12

I have no idea what you should do, but I just wanted to congratulate you on being the first person I’ve ever seen to use “immigrate” correctly!

Sorry, quote fail. That was for toconclude who beat me to it.

Palavah · 21/04/2021 22:19

Nothing in your post speaks against going.

Why are you waiting for permission?

anniegun · 21/04/2021 22:24

I have googled them but cant find either Country A or Country B so I cant help you

What now?
TheLastLotus · 21/04/2021 22:31

You’re young just do it

LadyWithLapdog · 21/04/2021 22:33

Go for it! At 27 you have so much time ahead.

BeetyAxe · 21/04/2021 22:36

Go for it, you only live once!

As someone who emigrated from native country, I can say...
Go for it. Try it.

Usernameisgone · 21/04/2021 22:42

Yes do it! I emigrated from UK 6years ago and have never looked back! You are so young and have no responsibility! Why not? Worse case scenario you hate it and can go back to home country?!

Sittingonabench · 21/04/2021 23:02

I would definitely do it but be aware it will be hard at some points until you have a good network of friends. Do you speak the language? That would be my next thing as it can be very lonely if you don’t. None of these things would stop me trying but you can make life easier for yourself by preparing and understanding the challenges before you’re in them.

DianaT1969 · 22/04/2021 01:02

Is there a reason you used country A and B instead of the actual country names? I'm wondering if you should try Country C.

Feelingconfused2020 · 22/04/2021 01:41

Unless I've read this wrong you've described a scenario where country B is better in all respects and you are single and young with no kids. If you don't go for this then what possible chance is there for you to ever be adventurous in the future? You have been ffered almost risk free adventure. Take it or accept you are not the kind of person who takes even the tiniest risk. There is nothing wrong with that.

PotentialI · 22/04/2021 01:48

Thank you everyone and will be Googling correct usage of "immigrate." Blush

I think I definitely am going to take the opportunity! I felt a bit sad mostly about leaving family and friends, etc, behind, but in reality I only see them once every few months anyway. They can visit and I can come back occasionally.

It's mostly shocked me as I wasn't expecting to get the Visa- I applied before covid, they got delayed and I honestly assumed it had been cancelled. Finding out it actually got accepted was amazing.

Go!!

Ulelia · 22/04/2021 05:09

Go. I went off for an adventure 12 years ago, thinking it would just be two or three years, and haven't been back. Yes you'll miss friends and family occasionally, and feel guilty for missing stuff like weddings, but Internet makes staying in touch so easy and you'll have so many more opportunities in country B.
And the word you're looking for is emigrate. You'll immigrate into country B, emigrate from country A. Smile

DaisyChainsForever · 22/04/2021 05:31

Sounds like an amazing opportunity to me!

Wallywobbles · 22/04/2021 05:52

Yup I'd do it. Go.

AmyLou100 · 22/04/2021 06:04

Go for it! 10 years from now you could have many commitments that won't allow you to do this, and you will have the regret of not doing it. You have alot to gain and very little to lose - so just do it.
