To hate this from people when you tell them you have a new job?

Recently scored a new job - good company, role seems varied, money is decent.

When I've told people where I'm going to all I've heard is

"Ooo you don't want to work there"
"Ooo XYZ worked there twenty years ago, she hated it"
"Ooo that'll be hard working there"

It's like they want to put you off before you've even reached your start date!!!!!

AIBU to think that workplaces aren't the same experience for everyone and that they should keep their opinions to themselves?!

Fair enough but imagine if you started the job and found out it was horrific. And your friends said "I knew it was bad but didn't want to say." You'd probably be annoyed at them

HollowTalk · 21/04/2021 15:59

People don't tend to like you to change, do they? It's the same if you say you're starting a diet or going to start running or a night class - they will always come up with reasons why you shouldn't do it.

ThatOtherPoster · 21/04/2021 16:01

Where’s your new job? Maybe it is notorious.

MakingMNGreatAgain · 21/04/2021 16:02

I don't think I've ever heard this and I've had quiet a few jobs! If all you have heard is negative opinions maybe there's something in that

user1636853246842157 · 21/04/2021 16:08

I've never been on the receiving end of comments like that and the only time I recall witnessing it was with someone moving to an employer notorious for making people miserable.

Redjumper1 · 21/04/2021 16:23

I've never received that comment except for when I got a job in one place and got those comments. I trusted the people saying it and took a different offer then and heard after about its rep. Maybe they are trying to help? Maybe they are jealous? Who knows.

81Byerley · 21/04/2021 16:33

We've got friends who are "experts" at everything, so if we mention we've bought something , got new meds for an illness, are going somewhere, there's always something wrong!

Wexone · 21/04/2021 16:33

there is a few companies around me that have a bad reputation , you are right everyone is different. But when a company has a high turn over of staff to me thats a red flag to me. I ahve worked in one of those companies and yes the reputation fits and i have seen things. However it gave me good experience for my next job( also made me realise what to look out in a company ) If someone asked me today about working i would be very honest with them on the comapny to make sure they have their eys wide open. I dont like people being treated crap

latedecember1963 · 21/04/2021 17:21

It's a bit like when you're pregnant and people seem to take delight in gruesome birth stories.
Congratulations on your new job, enjoy proving the doomsters wrong!

wingsnthat · 21/04/2021 17:24

I think it’s just a conversation starter. If someone tells me they work for X or are Y profession, it does make me think of people I know in the same company/profession. Not that I mention the people I know or try to put the person off from working there. It’s normal to think about these things, it’s just that the people you’ve been talking to don’t have a filter

TheThingsWeAdmitOnMN · 21/04/2021 17:25

Were you unemployed or still in a job?

If a friend was going fit a job I'd probably say what I'd heard/knew about the company, but not if you'd already accepted it -then there's nothing to say except 'congratulations, I hope you enjoy it'. If you've any self awareness anyway!

Which company is it?

UhtredRagnarson · 21/04/2021 17:25

I think it’s fair warning tbh. Any time I’ve had this reaction to a new job- they were right.

TSSDNCOP · 21/04/2021 17:28

I should've listened and believed the comments on Glass door. They were all bang on and I used to wish daily my MD would collapse and die from a heart attack in the middle of one of his horrific tirades.

I lasted 6 weeks and was out of the country for one on a business trip.

apooagnuandyou · 21/04/2021 17:29

If it's true, why shouldn't they tell you? You must be living in a small place if you have met so many former employees!

Whenwillitmakesense · 21/04/2021 17:37

Going through this at the moment... should have listened but confidence was low..

How long before it’s ok to leave a bad job? I’m looking for another but haven’t found one yet

ChocOrange1 · 21/04/2021 17:49

I agree with this. I don't think I've ever moved into a job and had 3 or more acquaintances who had previously worked there and had a bad experience. It doesn't bode well, unless it is a massive employer like the NHS where different offices/departments would be like totally separate offices.
Lassy1945 · 21/04/2021 17:50

How very odd
Literally never ever had this

And if I did, I’d be curious rather than irritated

BuyYourOwnBBQGlenda · 21/04/2021 17:54

I've never had that!

LolaSmiles · 21/04/2021 17:58

I've heard it with regards to schools, usually it's said when someone is thinking of applying. I've definitely chosen not to apply to a school because enough (separate) people have shared different negative experiences.
