To ask you how much your patio cost....??

Blatantly posting for traffic, but looking to get an idea of the cost of a new sandstone patio - total area about 35m2. Easy site access, the old patio needs removing and some extending into a lawn area to increase the size. I'm in a fairly expensive part of the south east. Thank you!

We’ve just paid about £1000 for materials on a 25m2 patio.

We’re paying a friend to lay it at mates rates so haven’t included that. Plus we’ve done all the prep ourselves so save labour that way.

Aprilshowersandhail · 21/04/2021 13:26

Being a good mner I have a dh to sacrifice to go under it.
Foundations need to be deep - he is a big bloke!

Ah thanks @Aprilshowersandhail but I've already got one allocated to this patio Wink

DH laid a smaller patio in a different part of the garden a few years back. It looks great but he found it quite stressful. Maybe I will see if I can persuade him to give it another go. It might be like childbirth and he'll have forgotten the pain by now!

We just paid £5,000 for something slightly smaller (30sqm), in a patch of wasteland at the end of the garden - no previous patio to remove but extremely awkward access via our neighbour's side gate.

EmotionallyEncumbered · 21/04/2021 14:01

We've just paid £1650 for a 5m x 5m Indian stone patio.

thenightsky · 21/04/2021 14:28

We've just been quoted £4k to remove the old concrete slabs and replace with Indian sandstone. They are going to have to bring in a small digger to do the removal, so that pushes the cost up.

JudgeJ · 21/04/2021 15:16

I had 46 sq m laid for a bit over £3000, that included the removal and disposal of the old decking too and he's a proper builder.

Hobbesmanc · 21/04/2021 15:25

We are having a new terrace laying at the moment. We got a decent deal through the builder for Indian grey stone at £18 a sq metre- need fifty. Its cheaper than natural slate etc. They needed a digger to take up the old yellow York stone (which I freecycled) I did look at the porcelain tiles but the builder didn't recommend them.

Its going to cost around 6k in total- but that's with no work from us at all.

EmotionallyEncumbered · 21/04/2021 18:33

This is ours before and after, it was £1650 to remove the old and put the new down.

Pumpkyumpkyumpkin · 21/04/2021 18:39

We are just about to have ours done - 50m2 of sandstone slabs, which is 2 smallish patios and a border of path around the non patio bits, plus levelling the ground and taking up the existing patio and path - £5k. There's going to be a digger I think and I am hoping I might be allowed to have a go on it Grin

nanbread · 21/04/2021 18:41

Ours was about £4k in the end, needed a lot of levelling and a step put in.

Mingasauros · 21/04/2021 18:42

£7k 40msq - replaced brick with sandstone, also removed and disposed of decking and built a pergola and 2 large raised beds

MassDebate · 21/04/2021 18:46

We’re doing similar and paying just over £6k including materials (Indian sandstone) and removal of existing decking. We got 3 quotes which were all in that ballpark.

IEat · 21/04/2021 18:56

Cost me twice as it had it be replaced... couldn’t resist Brookside Trevor Jordache

Ilovelove · 21/04/2021 19:05

I can give you some rough ideas:

My new patio the slabs cost £30 per square meter, there was no patio to take up.

I don’t know how large my patio area is but it was big and included creating steps.

It took five and a half days for two men to lay plus one day getting materials etc. Day rate is £250 per day per man.

BUT my DH is a builder so him and his friend did it over three weekends. And I paid them with bacon sandwiches and tea. We also got trade prices on all materials.

I reckon you could get quotes anywhere between £4500 - £6000

jelly79 · 21/04/2021 19:18

I'm just having my garden done
24m2 porcelain tiles =£700
30m2 artificial grass = £430
Materials (and timber for sleepers) =£700
Skip = £240

Friends and family doing all the labour (thank god)

Had my fence replaced £1800

Was quoted £8000 for the lot

scaredsadandstuck · 21/04/2021 19:21

Thanks all. It's pretty varied. I know obviously the cost of the slabs will have a big impact on the overall cost. But it's helpful to have a ballpark as don't want to waste anyones time getting quotes if we can't afford it right now (suspect we can't really ☹️).

I was quoted a massive increase in price because the only access to my garden was through the house.

DiptyqueandDiamonds · 21/04/2021 22:30

We were quoted £2.5k plus VAT for a 3x3m patio with two steps around the main area. Mates rates as friend owns a building company.

DH has done it himself in the end. Cost approximately £750 in materials and seven days work, spread out over a few weeks. DH can turn his hand to most things though!

You could explain you are on a tight budget when you call them and ask for a ballpark figure over the phone given the size you want. I am sure they will probably still say they need to come out but if you have been upfront with them it will help ease your guilt.

Yeah I'm thinking I need to persuade DH to do this one as well. The worst bit last time was getting the site levelled off - he was paranoid about not having the right fall on the patio and water pooling on it.

Good point @StripyHorse - Also I could ask what we could do ourselves to keep the cost down - like clearing the area for them and getting rid of the old patio.

Hobbesmanc · 22/04/2021 14:43

If you manage to pin anyone down to do it, don't delay in ordering the slabs- there's a shortage
