Neighbours exercise noise

Our houses are detached but we have attached single garages between our house. Hope I've explained that ok?

Our neighbours have gym equipment in their garage and are often in there before 7am pounding away. It's always bothered me because we can hear the thudding. What's really peed me off is that they've put a TV on the wall now so we have to listen to that to. The door is always up. They are so noisy opening and closing it. AIBU to be bothered by this? It feels inconsiderate. The teenage son was playing music loudly in the garden last week and the language in it was disgusting. We've always been polite but felt a bit of tension as there have been times over the years I've had to say things like when their children and friends were playing football next to our cars on the driveway. Also the language wasn't nice. I don't want to be a grump but they do annoy me at times.

YANBU

any noise that can be heard by neighbours is too loud. Music, tv, screaming... it's anti-social.

You could just let them know nicely the noise travels and asks if they could turn things down? Sadly, people who are inconsiderate tend to know they are a nuisance, they just don't care. It's their house, they can be as twatish as they like apparently.

itbemay1 · 21/04/2021 11:36

We have the same set up as you OP and our NDN have a 'gym' too the constant dropping of weights drives me insane! It's not all day though so I just do my best to ignore it, the TV plus weights would make it worse though I suspect

Crowsaregreat · 21/04/2021 11:39

As a starting point, I'd tell them that you can hear them. They probably don't realise.

wildnow · 21/04/2021 11:49

Hope this explains the situation better. I don't want to be unreasonable but before 7am is a bit much for me. I'm aware they like to do exercise before work but I'd like a lie in now and again and to sit peacefully in my garden.

Honestly I’d just let them know you can hear them. From the layout you’ve drawn I wouldn’t expect to hear noise from their garage in your house, so they may be genuinely surprised.

Lolwhat · 21/04/2021 11:52

YABU it’s just normal living

Minesril · 21/04/2021 11:54

Ugh anyone who feels the need to 'drop weights' clearly doesn't know how to use them.

Reinventinganna · 21/04/2021 11:55

dudsville · 21/04/2021 11:55

I'd hate that. I was walking in a lovely quiet, low-key neighbourhood yesterday and was surprised to hear what sounded like an exercise class. I figured someone was following a video or something in their back garden. The nearest communal outside space was about a quarter of a mile away - as I neared I realised the sound was indeed an outdoors exercise class. I love seeing the restrictions of lockdown ease and folks congregating to exercise together outside, but I was really struck by how much it impinged on this neighbourhood seemingly far enough away from the event to not be bothered by it. If this was literally coming from next door I'd hate it.

Mumdiva99 · 21/04/2021 12:01

Hmmm - difficult. Our neighbours garage is just the other side of our living room wall - I hear the weight training in there and it can be heard from my son's bedroom. I have never complained - but, if they were doing it at 6:30am and waking my son I would be inclined to say something.

Loud music with swearing would annoy me more - I would have to remind the neighbours that it comes with an advisory warning for a reason and please don't foget you have young kids.

MaMaD1990 · 21/04/2021 12:06

I live in the same set up and my DP has a gym in the garage. I've gone in and told him to turn his music down a few times because of the noise for neighbours - always in the evening though around 7ish, my stomach dropped thinking this post was about us at first!!

pencilpot99 · 21/04/2021 12:19

I work out in my garage but always wear bluetooth headphones because I don't want to be annoying for the neighbours.

IntermittentParps · 21/04/2021 12:29

I don't think you can ask them to stop the sound of the actual exercise, or opening and closing the door, but maybe as a compromise tell them the TV noise is intrusive and ask if they could use headphones?

TheOrigRights · 21/04/2021 12:30

YANBU. I wouldn't be able to enjoy my exercise if I knew it was disturbing other people, especially so early. It's selfish.

I live in a terrace house and thankfully all the neighbours I've had have been courteous and conscious of others.

I have raised two children who play musical instruments, like to kick a ball and enjoy listening to shit music. I often tell them that there are people on the other side of the walls who don't want to hear them.

Are they on a treadmill? Tell them the weather is absolutely gorgeous for running outside at the moment Grin

GoWalkabout · 21/04/2021 12:47

I would ask if they could possibly use headphones for the TV. They are not going to stop using their gym at the time they want to and it could be worse.

This drives me nuts. Muscle men in my gym do that. Small willy syndrome.
gingerscot · 21/04/2021 12:59

Gyms are shut. It’s hard going for people who love to exercise. YABU about the exercise noise, but you could ask them to keep music/tv volume lower or use headphones. But you do sound like a grump looking for a reason to moan.

Not any more. They opened on the 12th April, along with outdoor classes. People who love to exercise have found a way to do so without disturbing others.
ftm202020 · 21/04/2021 13:42

This is just normal household noise. It might annoy you but they are allowed to have a TV on and exercise.

Aprilx · 21/04/2021 13:46

I sympathised until I saw the diagram. The garages appear to be at the bottom of the garden and are not attached and well away from the houses. Confused

JammyDozen · 21/04/2021 13:58

It’s not normal household noise before 7, is it?

They can also mitigate the noise by moving the TV, using headphones early/late/for extended periods and closing the door.

Op, you should speak to them as they may not realise. As others say, the setup may well make them feel you can’t hear them.

The post above about the quiet neighbourhood made me wonder. I feel like society’s whole approach to noise has changed and that there are so many more potential sources of noise (Bluetooth speakers, trampolines, outdoor gyms) it’s really difficult to get away from it. We seem to be dividing into two camps over it too: those who see noise as normal and acceptable (and the more there is, the more ‘normal’ it is to create even more), and those who find it difficult. Given that noise is associated with poor MH, bad sleep hygiene and so on, it’s concerning. I’m obviously in the latter camp and crave peace!

MsTSwift · 21/04/2021 14:00

They should Get some bloody ear phones! I go in my turbo and plug myself in no need to blast every other unfortunate soul in the vicinity!

ClaudiaWankleman · 21/04/2021 14:01

Is it dropping weights or running on a treadmill thumping?

If it's dropping weights, I think you could reasonably ask them to avoid dropping them, or to insulate the floor with those mats they use in gyms. If it's treadmill thumping, I think you just have to suck that one up as being normal household noise.

I am surprised you can hear the TV through two walls into your house. That also just seems like normal household noise to me.

RunnerDuck2020 · 21/04/2021 14:17

I think if they are out there at 7am with the main garage door wide open and the TV blaring then that’s pretty antisocial. However if they are closing the door while they’re in there and it’s just the noise of the door opening and closing and the actual exercising that’s bothering you then I don’t think you can really complain.

I may be biased as we have a gym in our garage which we like to use in the morning, but we do keep the door closed and don’t have a TV / play music so I would hope we’re not disturbing anyone!

TaraR2020 · 21/04/2021 14:19

At that time YABU!

P.s. love that you both have whales outside your homes, that's amazing!
