To ask why this happens to me very regularly when I fall asleep?

I've been a terrible sleeper for years...I wake in the night once or twice, sometimes more, and sometimes for hours at a time.

But I usually fall asleep very quickly. But what I've also noticed is that I will fall into a deep sleep as soon as I turn off the light but wake about 15-20 mins later. I then have to get back to sleep again, which is usually fine.

But why am I falling so immediately and waking so quickly?

And could this be part of a reason I'm a bad sleeper?

I do this too. I associate it with certain times of the month / hormones. Pre period I think.

What is your sleep hygiene like?
That is all the things that contribute to a good nights sleep:

  • room you are in including bed, light, temp
  • physical activity in the day
  • levels of stress
  • last meal of the day, when and what

I'm post menopausal, so hormone fluctuations are probably not the reason.

Sleep hygiene is good - believe me, it's needed to be!

This happens to me sometimes. I think it’s due to a cortisol spike.

What is your bedtime routine like?

I also sometimes wake for hours at a time in the night. I like to blame it on my partner’s snoring but if I’m being honest it happens even when he’s not around or not snoring sometimes

This happens to be a lot and it drives me crazy. I’m post menopause as well and the waking up seems to coincide with a hot flush so I assume it is related. I don’t know what the answer is though I’m afraid!

Do you drink alcohol frequently? Just wondered as alcohol will make you fall asleep quickly but often you'll wake shortly after as the alcohol starts wearing off.

It could be diet related? If I eat too late at night I struggle with my sleep.

Liveonyournerves · 21/04/2021 08:30

I rarely drink - maybe a glass every couple of months. I don't eat after 6pmish. I drink just a herbal night tea. I might watch TV on my laptop but not on my phone. I try to do physical activity every day but never anything that would stress body from afternoon on. I have a coffee and tea in the morning but no caffeine from afternoon on.

I dont know what else to do. I also am waking up hot at the moment, really boiling, which I've never had before. But the problem has been here for years.

I've done this for years. Waking up multiple times, waking up absolutely roasting, often waking with a headache. For me they are all symptoms of sleep apnea. Although DH says I've never snored.

I'm like this and after a sleep study I was diagnosed with a parasonnia. The doctor told me that I fall asleep so quickly because I'm so sleep deprived but that my body wont stay asleep for very long. On the night of the study I woke 62 times in 6 hours. I also sleep talk and move in my sleep, thankfully no sleep walking. He prescribed me melatonin but I got pregnant shortly afterwards and never got the chance to try them.

MintyMabel · 21/04/2021 09:16

Me too. When I wake it feels like I'm wide awake again. Very strange - and annoying.

Liveonyournerves · 21/04/2021 09:55

@romdowa - that's fascinating! I could def be sleep deprived. I get up very early, regardless of when I go to bed or how often I wake
