M&S are technically in the right but the court action will likely damage their reputation. They haven’t come out looking well and it’s early days. I never shop at Aldi and always use M&S - even I am with Aldi here.

Aldi might take a financial hit but they’ll recoup it with all their new fans from this. Clever marketing.

Whereas will M&S recover the hit to their reputation? Their food hall is their only successful offering, but they have been slowly downgrading their food quality to produce more profit. They’re losing their niche, and being a public enemy won’t help.

@poppycat10 I quite agree with your dh tbh. It's an amazing pr and I don't believe in "oh that was never planned"😁
Both companies pay considerable sums to pr specialists. And hopefully SM teams😂

@Footloosefancyfree

Has anyone tasted them? I don't like chocolate cakes covered in chocolate 😕
Chocolate covered in chocolate is the best way to eat chocolate Grin

I went in aldi today for the first time in a year. For a Cuthbert. They didn't have any, still spent 74£
It works...

MammaSchwifty · 20/04/2021 23:02

would a Kevin the Carrot cake actually be a carrot cake, though? I think that would be a touch macabre

@Oversize

It's all just an advertising gimmick on both sides. The cynic in me thinks even this thread was started by someone in the pay of... Apologies if that's wrong OP but like I said , I'm a cynic and advertising is quite sophisticated these days.
I had similar thoughts. Aldi are renowned Tweeters and any company wanting some free publicity would do well to have some beef with them.

@Pedalpushers

I think it was a bit tacky of Aldi to use charity to try and wriggle out of a possible intellectual property lawsuit. They do way too much ripping off other brands and I don't buy their wide eyed 'oh but what about CHARITY' for a second. Noone comes out of this well but M&S haven't done anything wrong that any other company wouldn't do.

Clever on all sides. I couldn't get my hands on a Colin or a Cuthbert cake for DDs birthday this year! Asda didn't have any either and I wasn't trawling round a fourth supermarket!
