To think that there are a lot more pressing legislative issues than footballall

Apparently PM Johnson is looking at using legislation to stop English clubs joining the European Super League - BBC News. I can't help but think that there are issues that have been waiting for years for legislative attention and should be prioritised over sodding football. The state of the housing market, sexual crime reform, women's rights, child poverty...

AIBU?

I've just invented a new sport! âš½

Yabu, he'll go with whatever he thinks will get him the popular vote!

Kingdombythesea · 20/04/2021 16:30

Too right.
And Sky news is covering the story as if it’s the most important thing on Earth right now.

wesowereonabreak · 20/04/2021 16:32

I think the majority will disagree, that's the point. I couldn't care less about football, but in term of finance and popularity, even I know that it's HUGE.

so there you go.

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 20/04/2021 16:33

This was my thought too. "No action is off the table" to stop this, meanwhile Brexit and Northern Ireland... err... didn't he use that same phrase about Brexit borders and Northern Ireland??

At least with it being such a petty matter we can laugh at it.

paralysedbyinertia · 20/04/2021 16:34

YANBU.

I can't believe how much attention this is getting in the media in the midst of a pandemic and an associated economic crisis, against a backdrop of catastrophic climate change, serious inequality in our society, and allegations of corruption and impropriety at the very top level of our government.

Bonkers.

paralysedbyinertia · 20/04/2021 16:35

And yes, not to mention the mess that is Brexit and the awful resurgence of violence in Northern Ireland.

But let's just talk about football, eh?

GabriellaMontez · 20/04/2021 16:35

Yanbu.
God knows what's being swept under the carpet while the media bleat on about this and BJ prioritises it.

Fluffinell · 20/04/2021 16:36

YABU. I don’t have a clue about football but I know financially it could be disastrous. If not sorted right now will be too late.

paralysedbyinertia · 20/04/2021 16:37

I wonder if all of the people who complained about the DofE coverage will complain about the airtime given to this as well?

wesowereonabreak · 20/04/2021 16:38

If every other program is cancelled too , I am sure they will
BlowDryRat · 20/04/2021 16:42

Brexit, Northern Ireland, the inability of the NHS to cope with a pandemic, university students losing ££££, racism (oh yes, that one doesn't exist HmmAngry), structural inequalities, the destruction of the leisure and hospitality sectors, climate change...

YABU, only because you shouldn't believe anything that come out of BJ mouth. if he said he was looking at introducing legislation to stop clubs joining ESL, he is only saying it for the popular vote.
He won't do it.

All the things you listed are important. But I read the other thread about ESL and I can see why football is important.

And it reminded me of my own family situation. My grandad died from a very long battle with cancer. It was horrible. In the end he was bed bound and he knew it was his final day's. My dad sat with him and all my grandad wanted to do was watch one final match of his favourite football team (and see them win Grin).
Which is what they did. It brought my grandad so much joy in his final days.

EsmaCannonball · 20/04/2021 16:51

I can't stand football but I suppose there are potentially thousands of jobs riding on this, not just those directly employed by lower tier teams, but the people employed by shops, cafes and takeaways around those stadiums. I just wish he government would act with such alacrity on other issues. I also think it's interesting that people who accuse others of being gammon if they wish to protect jobs in other sectors are now talking about the working class roots of football and the evils of global capitalism.

YoniAndGuy · 20/04/2021 16:57

Ahhh but nothing's more important than a 'BORIS SORTS IT AAAAHT!' headline, is it?

newnortherner111 · 20/04/2021 17:00

Hopefully it will not need to get to legislation, and the six English clubs concerned will see sense.

CarmelBeach · 20/04/2021 17:02

I was thinking this too

Football is private business

I can see that if Ts & Cs are breached wrt to season tickets etc, there's an issue. But that should be sorted by a consumer body surely?

If there's a reason it should be dealt with by government, I have no idea what it is.

PussyCatEatingEasterEggs · 20/04/2021 17:04

YANBU.
My team is one of the 6 to join the SuperLeague.
I have no problem with it.

I do have a problem with Government interference.

What are they trying to hide by making such a massive fuss over this?

ssd · 20/04/2021 17:05

It might not be important to the great and good of mn, but it is important to an awful lot if people eg. The fans

But let's all trash football,eh??

Might be different if it was rugby??

dreamingbohemian · 20/04/2021 17:10

YANBU it's appalling

No one's saying people can't care about football, the question is whether the government should prioritise a football drama (which will probably die off once the lawyers get into it) over all of the much more important things actually affecting people's lives. Children going hungry, violence against women, Northern Ireland, I mean come on.

CarmelBeach · 20/04/2021 17:13

I'd say the same

Sports are about money. AFAIK they are private businesses. They can organise their competitions and/or games how they like.

CarmelBeach · 20/04/2021 17:14

To be clear, I'd say the same about rugby

BlowDryRat · 20/04/2021 17:15

I'm sure it is important to a lot of people, including my DS and other members of my family. I don't think the government should treat it as a top priority for immediate legislative action though. It's hardly the most pressing issue of our times.

YABU. Just because you aren’t interested in football doesn’t mean it’s not important.

UrAWizHarry · 20/04/2021 17:24

It's just pure populist opportunism.

The whole thing is a joke, with fans getting upset that their clubs are chasing the money - that's ALL topflight football has been about for fucking YEARS.
