What to do about job situation

I have a job which i really enjoy. I was moved to this department on request due to bullying staff, and the new place is just lovely. The only issue is that I used to have a lot of overtime (paid hourly) and now I only usually get 18 hours a week, whereas I had 30 plus before.
The 18 is usually set over 2-3 days, so I have the other days to do something else.
Im signed up for agency work on the other days which sadly is a zero hours contract, and I've had nothing today or yesterday.

With my current job, i don't work set days and have to be flexible across the 7 days, though i get my rota a few weeks in advance.

Hence why my other work is agency, as I can't commit to fixed hours.

My main job is in care and I'm in supply teaching for the 2nd job.

Not sure what to do as I need closer to full time hours and supply is too much of a gamble.

Does anybody else have a situation like this? May have to leave my 18 hours job which is such a shame but not sure what else to do.

When I had over 30 hours supply work was something I could do if I had a free day and wanted extra money, but now I'm reliant on it for half of my monthly income.

If your used too and need the 30 plus hours your best looking for a full time job.
Your can’t guarantee the agency work if your zero hours.

Isaidwhatisaid1 · 20/04/2021 13:57

Yeah sadly need the full time income to afford rent etc.
I have an interview coming up for long term supply which would be great and Monday to Friday 8 till 3.
However not sure if my employer would be able to fit my 18 hours around this so I need to make a decision.

Good luck for your interview.
Are you able to work weekends, after 3?
Best approaching it to them soon as you can so things can be worked out pretty quickly if you do get offered it.

Isaidwhatisaid1 · 20/04/2021 14:02

Thank you.
For my main job I have to be free weekends too, it's tricky really.
I just need to ask the employer and be upfront asap.

Unfortunately overtime isn't guaranteed so shouldn't really be relied on in case situations like this arise where it's not available.

If it's not possible to have set days in both jobs then to be honest I think your only option will be to look for a job that is a contracted 30 hours. At least you will then have the security of knowing you are guaranteed those hours

Isaidwhatisaid1 · 20/04/2021 14:12

Yes you're right, I think just when I took this job there was always tons of overtime and I was told that I could get full time hours each week but indeed nothing is guaranteed.
I have thought of going with a care agency but not sure how much work is available.

Is there no bigger contracts within the care industry that you could apply for?

Isaidwhatisaid1 · 20/04/2021 14:14

Yes there's always full time care work about which is good, would just be a shame to leave my current role but maybe I'll have no choice sadly.

Bank work at your local hospital?

PinkCookie11 · 20/04/2021 14:33

What I would do is;
Have the interview as a back up
Take to your employer and about a bigger contract, if not, ask about shifts if get new job.
Apply for a different job!

PeachScone · 20/04/2021 14:34

I was also going to suggest doing bank HCA shifts at a local hospital.

Thanks for the replies, is bank work different from zero hours?
I've asked my boss already and they said that there will only be extra work when others take holidays sadly.
It is a shame as there are so many toxic workplaces nowadays and I've found one where the staff are so genuinely nice.

Bank work is similar to agency and zero hours. You’ll be employed by the company to work in the one setting. Usually with hospitals they always have shifts and can be booked as late as the night before so would help with working around your other job.

I used to do this to work around uni and home life. Shifts that paid more unsociable hours were harder to get but they always had plenty. They’d also have shifts where you turn up in the office and get allocated a ward as and when people phone in sick.
