Parking fines - I've been so stupid

Branster · 19/04/2021 19:52

I’m not sure where to post this, not a strictly AIBU thread (I know I am BU as far as rules go) but I’m desperate for some sensible advice and maybe a glimmer of hope.

I’ll try and describe my situation in a rational manner. It might not be a big deal for some people but it is for me.

Over the last few weeks I’ve been partly working away from home driving to an office at various times of the day.
I got in the habit of stopping on the way back home to clear my messages, catch up on urgent calls and do minor paperwork in my car - nice and quiet, no distractions, no weird people walking by etc - before returning home where I wouldn’t get the chance to finish these tasks before 10-11PM. Clear the head sort of thing so I’m ready for doing the full on evening house duty ‘shift’. Like a lot of people, I am at the limit being in a constantly occupied house all the time without any quiet time with zero interruptions. So grabbing a short period of time to get rid of outstanding little work tasks like this does help me be a better person in the evenings at home.

So I stop in a very safe, nearly empty secondary train station car park which has this car number plate recognition parking system which I vaguely noticed. I assumed if I stop just for a little bit and stay in my car I should be OK and didn’t even consider getting a ticket (Not exactly a ticket, it’s a pay system of some sort). Technically I was using the car park but not in the traditional sense of leaving the car there. Who am I kidding?! I was using the car park. Even though it was a stopovers.
Breaks on average between 10-30min max.

Today I got home to an £85 penalty notice dated 8th April. In theory this should be the first fine, maybe I didn’t stop there before that date or maybe there is a grace period of 15min or so and I didn’t stop for too long prior to this date or maybe earlier dated letters are yet to arrive.
If this was the first recorded breach of parking rules, I might get another 7-8 penalty notices, not sure, including today. Nearly £700, potentially. That’s an awful lot of money to me especially when I haven’t budgeted for it and when it doesn’t even benefit anyone in practical terms.

I’m so, so cross with myself for being so negligent and incredibly stupid and I am at a loss as to what I can do to limit the damage.
I know these tickets can be disputed within a certain amount of time. I’d need to wait at least another week to get all the letters and try to write a dispute for all of them in one go on the basis of what exactly, other than utter stupidity.

My first thought was to try and call the company issuing the tickets first thing tomorrow morning to get the total number of offences from them and to tell them the truth and ask if there is any way of reducing the fines.

I can’t think straight, I am in a right mood about it and I feel like the biggest idiot on the planet. I feel like crying with anger at myself (and a bit of self pity).

I can’t ask anyone in RL for advice, I am very embarrassed. I never park illegally on the road and never even got a speeding ticket, I’m always do careful and mindful of consequences and I’ve just failed in a spectacular way.

It is a lot of money, potentially. I would agree to pay 1 fine of £85 in the context of my predicament. Has anyone got any practical advice, experience in this sort of thing? How can I argue my case against all these fines which will be pouring in soon?

Phew! And I shaking when on the phone and was beetroot red with embarrassment and being scared about the outcome.

Great news!

When you get home perhaps you can just stay in your car 20-30 minutes to finish your working day before you go in?

Branster · 20/04/2021 14:19

I did think of that option but there's the real risk of my super nosy and annoying neighbour making an appearance - he's omnipresent!

OP posts:
RandomMess · 20/04/2021 14:27

🙄

Show your neighbour the hand or pretend you are on a call?

Be brusk with "if I'm sat here after work it's because I'm doing urgent work so can't chat"

JustAnotherOldMan · 20/04/2021 14:29

@CovidCorvid

I run a Facebook car park charge appeal group. Sadly from what you’ve said it doesn’t sound like you have ground for appeal. There’s a very small chance that the signage isn’t up to spec but most train station carparks are run by one of the main outfits and normally have adequate signs.

This group on fb is probably the best for advice, chances are someone may know the actual car park. www.facebook.com/groups/fightyourprivateparkinginvoice

Definitely worth asking them nicely to reduce the amount you have to pay if you get a lot of tickets. Don’t follow any advice to ignore. It’s outdated advice. The firms are getting more militant at chasing people and I’ve seen a lot of people lately with county court judgements against them due to ignoring. Also seen people lose in court.

This, I know someone who ended up with a CCJ after repeatedly failing to pay parking tickets
RandomMess · 20/04/2021 14:29

My mature neighbours are a bit like that but tbf they are very very bored due to lockdown and shielding so I can understand their keenness to chat at every opportunity.

GhostCurry · 20/04/2021 14:33

“ A bit bizzare but most certainly in my favour.”

Not bizarre, these sorts of rules exist to stop people from being bankrupted by honest mistakes.

We once got back from a longer-than-expected trip abroad to a stack of parking tickets - our resident’s permit has expired while we were away. I felt the same way you did OP. But there are rules to protect people against huge fines that could derail life.

Some of the posters on this thread have a really crappy attitude. I’m glad you resolved it OP!

overwork · 20/04/2021 14:35

My boyfriend kept doing this at a place he visits for a hobby. He did a course so was going there regularly, I went with him once on a weekend for extra practice. I pointed out the very obvious parking notice and paid up. It turns out he contributed to ignore both me and the massive signs everywhere. This car park also worked on number plate recognition, but for some reason he only got fines for 2 out of the 6 visits. I am only telling you this in the hope that the car park you used also only switches on their cameras sporadically and it turns out not to be as bad as you expected!

overwork · 20/04/2021 14:37

Ooh sorry should have read further down, I see that you have already sorted it - phew!

SylvieHortensis · 20/04/2021 14:53

There has been some crap advice on this thread. MSE forum is the place to go for this, not Mumsnetters who'll give opinions even when they don't know what they're talking about. No wonder these parking cowboys are making £££millions out of mugs!

jetadore · 20/04/2021 14:59
  1. Do not even think of contacting them until you actually have received multiple notices.
  2. Ask for advice on pepipo forum.

Good luck!

stackemhigh · 20/04/2021 15:04

Great news OP! Any chance they’ll let you off on the one fine? Grin

EverythingRuined · 20/04/2021 15:05

Brilliant news OP. I'm so pleased for you. £50 doesn't seem so bad now.

winkingeyealcoholsuggestion · 20/04/2021 15:28

PHEW! Well done sorting it out.

Branster · 20/04/2021 15:48

Yes £50 sounds quite a good deal all of the sudden. Expectations set the tone for this nightmare.

Ooh I couldn't have asked to be let off the one fine but that's the sort of thing my DH would say. 😁 Who is yet blissfully unaware of my predicament. I'll have to tell him tonight. It would have made zero difference yesterday as he'd only have got me more stressed by preaching to the guilty party for 24h whereas I needed clarity and a plan for moving forward in solving this asap.

OP posts:
VanCleefArpels · 20/04/2021 15:56

Don’t wait to get every possible ticket before appealing as this may mean you miss deadlines. Appeal each one by one according to the instructions on the ticket. If your appeals are unsuccessful you need to engage with the company to agree a payment plan if paying up is not affordable. If you don’t do this there is a good chance the debt will be passed on to a collections firm and additional charges will be added and even CCJ against you eventually which you really want to avoid.

I’m a CAB adviser - I can’t tell you how many calls we get about these sorts of tickets. It takes a strong stomach to see if they will sue you and this strategy can leave you far worse off.

wesowereonabreak · 20/04/2021 16:11

I'm surprised though that the barrier let you out if you hadn't paid

no barrier in any of my local train stations. You don't get charged for the first 5 or 10 minutes though. Not that it helps the OP in anyway!

Toomuchtrouble4me · 20/04/2021 17:56

Just plead ASAP. They can cancel as a gesture of goodwill. I gave similar - have been doing the same primary school run for 17years, 3 routes back, and in March they decided to make one road in one of the routes electric cars only with a tiny sign which I didn’t see, I know the route like the back of my hand so I didn’t look at kerbsigns.
I’ve got 5 tickets @ £65 each. Husband has 2.
We’ve just thrown ourselves at their mercy and begged. No reply yet. Good luck.

ovenchips · 20/04/2021 18:07

Brilliant news! Well done you for getting it sorted after such an unpleasant realisation. And relax!

friendlycat · 20/04/2021 18:10

Well that's good news and all sorted. At least you confronted it head on and had the conversation, paid the fine and now know that there is no more to come. Valuable lesson learnt.

(I know somebody who sat in a McDonald's car park, to make a phone call, near an airport for 5 minutes and didn't get out of the car. Yes £60 straight fine.)

waitingpatientlyforspring · 20/04/2021 18:26

I got caught by one of those number plate recognition fines. My ds and I had run into spirts direct about 15 mins before store closing. This car park has always been for customers and free (although I had not parked there for years). I rushed in and swapped the shoes and went back to the car. Then decided to pop to mcdonalds which wasn't far away but I knew I would have time before the car park shut. I was parker there for less than 30 mins after 5.30 and the car park was almost empty. Got a £90 fine ☹️ I paid it as DH didn't want to risk a bigger fine.

Makeupface · 20/04/2021 18:48

They can only fine you if there is a sign up stating the specifics like when you can and can't park / how long you can park for etc. You need to check that out first

mylifestory · 20/04/2021 20:02

FOR ADVICE ON WHERE YOU STAND, PUT THIS ON PEPIPO WEBSITE - IS THE OFFICIAL PLACE TO GO. DONT JUST LISTEN TO ANYONE

Blooboi · 20/04/2021 20:03

Glad it worked out. I was about to say that at my station, you get twenty minutes grace.
For those that think you automatically get away from them by ignoring them , you might want to Google Barry Beavis v parking eye. He refused and went to court several times ( different court's ) including the supreme court. He lost. It would of been v expensive , but a lawyer took it on pro bono and parking eye agreed before the appeal to waive the legal fees.

Overdale · 20/04/2021 20:56

Check if it is a "request to pay" in which case you don't need to pay given the magnitude of the possible debt it's probably best to seek some professional help
