AIBU moving into house with a cat in no-cats neighbourhood

Asking for a friend :-)
Buying a house (freehold) in a newly-built (20 years old) neighbourhood and have received a letter from the resident's association advising no cats are allowed.
AIBU to continue my purchase and move in anyway? Do the Res Assoc have any legal right to stop anyone owning a cat?
Looking for advice as nearing completion and purchase chain will be affected.

DS used to rent a flat with a no washing clause. It was the ground floor 'garden flat' on a small gated development, with patio doors that opened onto a bit of a terrace. The lease specifically said he wasn't allowed to dry on that terrace.
The flat itself was tiny, no room for a dryer and no bathroom ventilation for drying in there so options were extremely limited. In the end he said fuck it and dragged his airer out on the terrace in the summer months.

Like others have said though it was a warning flag for other behaviours from the RA.
@LaBellina funny I was just thinking how wonderful it would be to live in a cat free neighbourhood. It would definitely be an attraction to me.
Each their own 😅. I would worry it means that they’re very intolerant people, now it’s cats...what’s next ? Dogs ? Children playing on the street ? As much as I can understand that some people don’t like cats...I would worry there’s more to it then just avoiding cat nuisances.

Porcupineintherough · 22/04/2021 22:56

Probably for some there would be. I just happen to prefer garden birds, plus hate picking cat mess up in the veg bed. I do like the sound of children playing though so I dont think I'm too intolerant.

I don’t think it will end well living there with a cat

Op, where is this? Asking for a friend Grin

Whammyyammy · 25/04/2021 21:33

I would definitely buy it and ignore the RA. But I enjoy a good fight and would take pleasure in winding them up, I'd be a mad cat lady and have loads. If its your house and land, those busy bodies can't enforce it

Kittykate15 · 25/04/2021 21:37

It really depends on where the original covenant came from and why its in place. Theres not enough information to say whether its enforceable or not!

Bet the whole neighbourhood is totally overrun with rats and mice. How peculiar.
