To think the school bells should be switched off

I live around the corner from my DDs school and it is an INSET day so the kids are off. I was having a lie in this morning only to be disturbed by the morning bell. AIBU to think that they should be switched off on days kids aren’t attending school?

How loud is the school bell? It must be deafening to the people in the building if you can hear it from round the corner.

Timper · 19/04/2021 15:47

Do they normally switch them off? Used to live next to a school and they rang all throughout the holidays without fail.

minniemomo · 19/04/2021 15:48

You chose to live near a school yabu

Yes I’ve never heard them ring during the holidays. They didn’t ring once during lockdown either

Does it really matter?

MeadowLines · 19/04/2021 15:57

We can hear them from our local schools too. They were off for lockdowns and holidays etc but for the odd day off they do sometimes get left on. I quite enjoy hearing the bells then rolling over and feel smug staying in bed!

Presumably they're on a Monday to Friday timer thingy and it's a hassle to programme them especially to accommodate certain Mondays etc

As if teachers haven't got enough to do

Most schools have admin staff who'd be responsible for such things.

HerdyGerdy · 19/04/2021 16:20

It might be like my school - they try not to turn off the bells too regularly as the system is fragile. 🙄

CatCup · 19/04/2021 16:20

They are on a timer Mon to Fri during term time.

I think yabu as you chose to live by a school. Sorry!

fizbosshoes · 19/04/2021 16:21

DDs school doesnt have a bell to signal the end of lessons which I think is really weird!

SamMil · 19/04/2021 16:22

Yes, you're being unreasonable.

Who also tend to be rather busy!
Daisiesarecute · 19/04/2021 16:57

Surely even though the bells are on a Monday to Friday timer they can turn them off without disrupting the timers?

I'm guessing that is one of those things that's easily forgotten, when it's a single day.

I'm pretty certain that the main bells still rang on our training days. But then they needed to be as people still needed reminding to leave their classrooms and head for the hall at nine for the start of the training, or to come back from their lunch break. And they might be manually rung to allow for changed timings for the various breaks.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 19/04/2021 17:02

We live near a 3 school site. We can hear the bells in the holidays because the whole area is quieter with no children about. I don't mind it at all.

AfternoonToffee · 19/04/2021 17:04

The bells wouldn't bother me, however I wish the school behind me would switch the lights off, or at least some of them. They don't disturb me, but I just think about all the wasted electricity.
