To want them to see DS face to face

My DS is 3 months old and has been under the weather.

Unfortunately one of his symptoms is a cough but he has been tested for Covid and it was negative.

I have explained this to my GP and said I can happily show the NHS test confirmations but they are still only offering me a telephone appointment.

AIBU to think a young baby should be seen in person if they have tested negative?

Call 111 at a weekend. The triage process may mean he is seen by an out of hours doctor in a medical centre due to his age and perception of vulnerability at that age.

Take the phone appointment. They're often the first stage to getting a face to face. I don't know any GPs who wouldn't subsequently offer a face to face.

Nonononomaybe · 19/04/2021 09:27

Mine usually do phone appointment in the morning and then make an appointment face to face for later on in the day once we’ve spoken.
Hope DS is ok 💐

Luckingfovely · 19/04/2021 09:28

Yup, agree with @NamechangeTTC - all the surgeries I know offer telephone appts first and then will offer you an in-person if they think it's necessary.

Very sensible and to be expected in the current times, nothing to get upset about.

if your baby were actually ill/you were actually worried you would accept a telephone appointment as first option.

people like you are contributing to genuinely ill people not being able to get appointments (or even get through on the phone...) at the moment.

also doctors can't do anything for a baby with a cold anyway.

I never said I haven't accepted a telephone appointment? They are ringing me later today but it's just another wasted day waiting to see them as I don't see how they can possibly check him over properly over the phone.

If you must know he's now had diarrhea for a number of days, it's not just a baby with a cold and I am worried hence why I've asked to see a Dr? What are you suggesting? I just took him for a Covid test, waited for the result and then asked for a GP appointment when it was negative just to waste their time for fun?

People like me? My very young child is poorly and I've asked to see a GP about it. Fucking hell you're right, how terrible of me.

@suspiria777
Are you suggesting the op isn't genuinely worried? Bit of a harsh reply and how exactly have you diagnosed a strangers baby over the Internet? Wouldn't need GPs if we all had your skills would we!
@PurelyDo I would take others' advice. Get the phone consult and discuss a face to face appointment. Hope your little one is better soon.

PurelyDo · 19/04/2021 12:31

It's just frustrating because (understandably) I've had to go for the CV test, wait for that result and now I've got to wait again for a telephone call and them most likely wait for a face to face appointment, all the while my 3 month old isn't well.

This.

It's also protecting the baby from unnecessary contact. Loads have people have been in that building today. I work in one.

suspiria777 · 19/04/2021 12:41

you didn't say you had accepted the telephone appointment and it was strongly implied from your OP that you had refused it.

BuyYourOwnBBQGlenda · 19/04/2021 12:47

Bless you, how worrying. Could you also call your HV and 111? Diarrhea for several days would worry me. Is baby showing any signs of dehydration?

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 19/04/2021 12:49

Yanbu. This is one of my big bugbears.

The phone consults are a waste of time for a baby that age, and they delay you getting seen. Precovid at my GP you would ring at 8am and a poorly baby that age would get seen by 9.30. Now you wait 3 hours for them to call you back at noon.

A baby with a cough can actually be quite serious. I took DD to the GP with a cough at that age pre Covid. Thank god she was seen at 9.30am as the outcome of the appointment was she was sent straight to hospital and required breathing support.

GPs should be excluding babies and toddlers from phone consultation triage. It's a waste of everyone's time, delays the baby getting seen and is dangerous.
