Children's noise in a mid-terraced house

I moved from America to a Victorian mid-terraced house two years ago, and had been really fortunate with quiet and considerate neighbors. Unfortunately, one of my neighbors moved out and a family with two young boys (roughly 5 and 7) moved in. I can hear them ALL the time! Running, laughing, talking, singing, crying, shouting, you name it. The noise also travels through my kitchen windows when they're in the garden.

I really like kids and have no problem with general neighbour noise, but it's loud enough for me to understand what the kids are saying word for word.

Is all of this normal for a mid-terraced house? Or are they just noisy? Is there any etiquette for dealing with the noise? Or do I just have to live with it?

If you can hear every word they are saying that suggests to me that you're in the sort of terrace that has very thin walls. I think your two choices are get used to it, soundproof some key rooms or move - not the right sort of house for someone who wants peace and quiet.

Try living in a ground floor flat, the noise is even worse 😤

If you can hear them talking, it's clearly really badly sound proofed. You can't expect people not to talk inside their own home. So I think you need to look into sound proofing

Think how their poor parents feel. (From the parent of 5 and 7 year old boys with serious lockdown/ self isolation fatigue).

Weather is picking up, restrictions are easing. Back to school on Monday (hopefully for the full term). Hopefully out of the house a lot more.
