to use normal hand tied bouquets

for our wedding?

I'm generally clueless about weddings and you lot have been so helpful with my various queries

Postponed last year. Rebooked for July this year and we've sorted precisely nothing.

I've been quoted £80 for an informal bouquet. We're not skint but it's a very relaxed wedding on a working farm and would rather throw money at more drinks and food for guests. I also have a few bridesmaids and they'd be £50

Could I just order normal bouquets from the local florist or buy them in Tesco or am i deluded?

What's the difference? They might be a bit drippy I guess - not sure how wedding florists get them not to drip 🤔

I think that as it's your wedding, you should have whatever you want. I'd probably order them from a florist, just to ensure they are fresh and all the same (if that's what you want), or that you get specific colours that you want. I have no issue with supermarket flowers, it's just that you can't always be sure what will be available and fresh on the dy you want them.

CornishTiger · 17/04/2021 18:38

I made my bridesmaids bouquets with supermarket flowers and my lovely friend paid for mine from a local florist which was very generous and kind. However in reality there wasn’t a huge amount of difference.

CMOTDibbler · 17/04/2021 18:38

If you are doing your own flowers, it is much easier if you use silk flowers as you can faff with them all you like well ahead of time and the stems are stiffer so you can just bind them together with ribbon. My friend wanted calla lilies, so just used 3 of those in silk, tied together. Afterwards she wrapped fairy lights round them, stuck them in a big glass jar and had them as a decoration. Hobbeycraft or some garden centres have a huge range of silk flowers

See - in my mind I can do ours!

I nipped to Tesco for some for a trial run of button holes earlier but they had no gyp or anything so I bought prosecco and came home to muse it instead

I hit Tesco's the eve before my wedding for my flowers and for the tables.

Thank you - I 100% want real ones though.

I’ll try and find you some pictures. I am the least creative person but think I did well.

CornishTiger · 17/04/2021 18:43

Tesco never had gyp here. Only asda

I've been collecting Douwe Egberts jars for months. Definitely doing table flowers ourselves.

I know it sounds a bit tight but I want loads of colour and informality!

I didn't have flowers. I'm not sure my mother's over it yet (it was 20 years ago).

I love wild flowers while they're growing. I don't like cut flowers much aside from a spontaneous bunch of daffodils now and then.

You don't actually have to carry a bouquet...

Whoateallthechocolate · 17/04/2021 18:45

I went to Tesco's (as they do the cheapest peonies) the day before our wedding and also raided our garden for some roses. My
Mum & I spent a lovely hour that afternoon drinking prosecco & making bouquets.

nicknamehelp · 17/04/2021 18:47

3 sunflowers (tesco sell them) tied together simple but beautiful

Pogmaasal · 17/04/2021 18:52

I think you should do it, it sounds lovely! Maybe speak to the people in your local shops and ask them about expected deliveries. Im not saying they will keep them aside but if they can tell you when the flowers are due in then you can make sure you get there promptly after to have best choice. Maybe do that in a few shops to get a good variety

steff13 · 17/04/2021 18:52

Do you have a wholesale flower market near you? Sometimes they're open to the public. You can get nice flowers at wholesale prices.

chorusline79 · 17/04/2021 18:54

You can definitely do them yourself! I did as we were on a tight budget. I ordered the flowers from a florist warehouse type place. I ordered gypsophila, avalanche roses, some greenery and some other bits and bobs. Made my own centrepieces just putting flowers into jugs. Bouquets I just made myself and used florist wire and tape to make them. Check youtube. Loads of videos to help you. My wedding was quite chilled and so I wanted casual flowers.

My son was married just after they became allowed last year. We only knew it was definitely going ahead 5 days before. I got some sunflowers from sainsburys and bound them with twine. The button holes where yellow freesias with some blue flower tied with the same twine and a bit of leafy stuff from the garden.

Merryoldgoat · 17/04/2021 19:01

I did my own - much cheaper and used greenery from MIL’s garden.

@Workyticket My bridesmaids had Home Bargains flowers, wrapped with some hessian around the stems and then some colourful ribbon Smile

Sounds perfect. My friend suggested twine when we were chatting on our Thursday night gin call!

Do not use silk Envy

You can def do your own just make sure you leave enough time and pick flowers with staying power (ie. Not hydrangeas)

Aldi really represent incredible value but waitrose etc is also as good.
Fun fact: If you want a large amount it is worth telling the supermarket in advance as they can put special orders in for you
