To keep a spin bike outdoors

Is this a bad idea? I’m in Glasgow (rainy!)

It is a second hand bike so I’m not spending a lot on it and would buy some sort of bike cover for when it’s not in use.

Anyone done this? We just don’t have the space inside

Even with a cover the mechanism will corrode if left outdoors. You’d need it under a proper permanent structure at the very least.

In Glasgow, quite often it rains for days on end (or it did when I lived there!) so how much use would you realistically get out of it?

IDontLikeMondays88 · 17/04/2021 15:37

Yes these are good points!

I wouldn’t, I am in NE Scotland. Mine sits in the sitting room facing the telly and other than when I use it, I forget it’s there. Not sure what to do once we start having guests in , but I use it every other day right now.

"AIBU that my bike was stolen despite an outdoor cover on it?"

sunflowersandbuttercups · 17/04/2021 15:56

What's to stop it getting stolen?

IDontLikeMondays88 · 17/04/2021 16:17

Our garden is fenced with a pretty high fence and the gate is locked. However I accept there’s a risk with keeping it outside which I why I would go for a cheaper second hand bike.
But it sounds like it would rust up anyway.
I’m now thinking it needs to be kept in a secure shed and taken out to use - does that sound a better plan? I accept in bad weather I couldn’t use it in the garden or stood need to bring it into the house but generally can a spin bike be stored in a shed as we have no room to swing a cat in our house

Can't you just go for a regular bike ride?

sunflowersandbuttercups · 17/04/2021 16:21

My DH has a waterproofed "gym" in the garden with electricity for his indoor bike - is that an option?

It means he can be noisy and use the bike whenever he wants and it doesn't disturb me.

Macncheeseballs · 17/04/2021 16:25

I don't understand the appeal of spin bikes and running machines when there are so many nice places to cycle and run in, especially in Scotland

IDontLikeMondays88 · 17/04/2021 16:32

No, I have a small baby so can’t easily take off for bike rides in the evening after work.
Also spin is so much for, it is a totally different sort of exercise from just cycling because of the music and coordinated element

Some sort of garden room is a possibility eventually yes

Macncheeseballs · 17/04/2021 16:33

Ah, good point

IDontLikeMondays88 · 17/04/2021 16:34

Spin is so much fun that is meant to say

If it's cheap & you can allow for how corroded it would get, maybe fine. It will degrade fast. Garden room/conservatory would be good compromise.

SunnySideDownBriefly · 17/04/2021 22:03

There isn't really a spin bike that you could roll in and out like that...it would be so heavy and you'd have to put it on really flat ground. They're really temperamental things and won't like the constant movement. You'll end up never using it.

What about a good bike and a turbo trainer? You can set that up inside and bring your bike in and out from the shed for it. Have a look into it. Would also mean you have a bike for if you do want to cycle somewhere someday!

TheCanyon · 17/04/2021 22:07

What about one of those wee bike/tool sheds you get?

When I first moved to Glasgow, it rained everyday for 9 bastarding weeks. And there started my love for tumble driers

marriedthegambler · 17/04/2021 22:10

A cheap spin bike won't give you that 'spin experience.' I keep mine in the garage (also Glasgow) and in the winter I find it a chore even going 10 steps outside to it. I spent £500 on mine and it's no where near a patch on the gyms spin bikes.

I'm now upgrading to a peloton which I said I'd never do 🤦🏼‍♀️

IDontLikeMondays88 · 18/04/2021 00:20

I would love a peleton, my issue is having space for it

OP posts:
RiojaRose · 18/04/2021 00:34

If you don’t have a shed for it, you could probably get away with an oldish bike on a turbo trainer over the summer, but you’d need to bring it indoors sometime in September. The main issue is that it’s very boring compared with actual cycling. Disclaimer: I have never tried the spinning thing but I do use bikes on turbo trainers indoors and it’s an effort to find the motivation to ‘cycle’ for more than a few minutes. However, it’s much more comfortable for me than any exercise bike I’ve ever tried, and better than doing nothing at all.

I think you'd always have space for a peloton. I'd lose a sofa or a kidney for one!
