Getting weaker by the day / strange symptoms

Tavelo · 17/04/2021 09:54

Here for traffic as I'm so worried.
For a few weeks I've been more tired than usual, sleeping earlier and didn't think too much of it, but for the past week I've developed some much more worrying symptoms.
I have widespread muscle weakness, on both sides of body, it feels harder to do anything and objects feel heavier than I know they are. I did have a few dull headaches too but they don't seem to be happening now, although the weakness is getting worse. I also tend to wake in the night and have had night sweats in addition to this and problems with feeling too warm at night.

I have also suddenly had blurry vision when reading small things, so I went to the optician as I was worried it could be MS, the optician said everything healthwise with the eyes was OK, I'm long sighted and he said it's probably not related to the other symptoms.

I would say it's unlikely to be long covid as I had coronavirus over a year ago and it was a normal symptomatic case with no problems afterwards, I haven't had recent signs of any infection.

Temperature is normal, heart rate and blood pressure normal, blood sugars normal. Most recent blood test was a couple of months ago which showed nothing glaringly wrong thyroid wise etc. I'm so concerned as to what it could be, I've never felt like this in my life! I have called GP who has arranged another blood test for calcium and something else I can't remember. Does anyone have experience with such symptoms or any ideas? I'm 29 and female.

I don't have any specific medical knowledge but if I were you I would keep a diary of symptoms and timelines and keep going back to your gp until you get answers. In the meantime do all the usual things like look at your diet & lifestyle and see if any changes could be made. Good luck

Thanks, keeping a diary is a good idea actually. As I said it's felt like a major decline over this past week. I hope it doesn't continue as I seem to get worse each day it's so awful not feeling as in control of your movements due to weakness.

I have 2 family member with ms, and that was my first thought when I read your op. Are they going to investigate that? Ask for vit D levels to be checked as well.

tired17 · 17/04/2021 14:01

I second getting your vitamin D levels checked which is by a blood test. When I had low vit D levels I felt absolutely awful, couldn't walk more than a few yards without feeling exhausted, ached all over, very tired and also low mood. It was a while ago now so I can't remember whether I had headaches as well. It's also the right time of year for vit D levels to be very low as we're coming out of winter. Even now I can tell when my levels are dropping because the exhaustion starts to come back.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

romdowa · 17/04/2021 14:20

This is how I feel when my b12 is seriously low. I'd reccomend heading to the gp to get bloods done again. Levels can drop fairly quickly and it's the first step in ruling stuff out

Adm1010 · 17/04/2021 16:37

Have you spoken to anyone at 111?

Sleepisoverrated150 · 17/04/2021 16:49

Did they check your b12 / iron levels it reminds me of anaemia. Vitamin D is another to check.

Laufeythejust · 17/04/2021 16:51

Do you have a carbon monoxide alarm? I’d double check it just to make sure it’s not something like that. Does anyone you live with have symptoms?

Babyroobs · 17/04/2021 16:55

I felt my legs were very weak some time ago and a GP at an out of hours surgery he told me it could be low vitamin B12 levels. He said that as I take lansoprazole it can hinder the absorption of vitamin B12. However when I mentioned to my own Gp what he had said he dismissed it. Might be worth getting your levels checked.

frumpety · 17/04/2021 17:04

There isn't any chance you could be pregnant is there ?

DishingOutDone · 17/04/2021 17:18

That sounds like hypertension but you say you've had your blood pressure checked, in which case all the suggestions above could be relevant.

Wegobshite · 17/04/2021 17:24

I would get your bloods done privately
Main ones to check for is b12 vitamin D iron and diabetes levels
Thriva is an online company that do your bloods very quick and easy to do .it’s about £60
Plus it will give you the guidelines if your under - over the recommended amount
I’m pretty sure the level in the uk in order to get some help is really high - and if your not at that level they tend to dismiss it
But the same level in Germany - France you would be hooked up to have a transfusion 😂 slight exaggeration but you get the picture .
Also if you have ever had any stomach - gastro problems this can sometimes stop you from absorbing vitamins properly so you need to either take liquid or sprays types

Cornettoninja · 17/04/2021 17:33

I wonder if it’s worth consulting a private online GP for an opinion. I’ve no experience of one but they’re less likely to be thinking within the constrictions of the NHS. It might give you some avenues to pursue with your own GP.

I think online services can be pretty affordable but I’d do your research if you can.

Gothichouse40 · 17/04/2021 17:36

I would ask about Fibromyalgia/ME. Some of your symptoms sound a bit like this.

Tavelo · 17/04/2021 17:41

Thanks everyone for your ideas I really appreciate it.
I haven't had b12 or anything like that checked but I usually take multivitamins, not very frequently but I kind of feel like it won't be a deficiency. I have also (infrequently) taken a separate high dose of vitamin D. I feel like even if I am deficient in something it can't possibly be severe enough to be causing this sudden decline in function. I'm just terrified as it seems every time I wake up it's worse. Good call on the carbon monoxide but I live with a few other people and none of them are experiencing anything similar. Also the emergency Dr I saw the other day (who did my blood pressure etc) also did my oxygen levels which were 100%.
If it doesn't improve soon or gets any worse I will have to go to urgent care frankly although I'm really not sure what they can do for general weakness that's worsened quickly. Can they refer you to anywhere? It might be better to call the gp back and report it has worsened if it does.

DariaMorgendorffer · 17/04/2021 17:45

You poor thing. Phone gp again and if you don't get answers consider urgent care. You know your own body, and you know somethings wrong. Could it be autoimmune related? Some of the symptoms don't sound unlike it. Hope you get some answers soon x

Thedot90 · 17/04/2021 17:53

Agree you should have bloods including for deficiencies - sounds very reasonable. Would not recommend urgent care as they can’t send the bloods you need/other people have suggested, and I’m not sure what pp thinks 111 could add?! DOI I am a GP and also work both for 111 and in an urgent care centre.
Hope you find an answer soon.

Tavelo · 17/04/2021 18:07

Also there is no possibility of pregnancy.

I am going to sleep in a different room tonight and maybe more nights to rule out mold exposure or anything weird although I can't see any mold in the room. If it gets worse I will tell the gp I think that is probably best bet, thanks again to everyone it's a really big help. Hate being both confused and scared!

tobedtoMNandfart · 17/04/2021 18:22

You need a blood test for blood counts.

I was diagnosed with leukaemia. Looking back it was the night sweats that were a dead giveaway that something was not right. The only other person I know who had them had lymphoma.

Obviously hope it's something less serious than that but they need to be investigating this for you.

Tavelo · 25/04/2021 21:47

Hi again, and thanks for the further ideas.
Unfortunately my condition continued to deteriorate to the point where I can't do much each day. I am having trouble walking now, I can do it but I have balance and coordination issues as well as more weakness. I'm also absolutely shattered, mentally and emotionally tbh. I have a lot of unpleasant pins and needles sensations in my legs too.

It is looking like MS which some of you mentioned already. It isn't confirmed yet but I have a head and neck MRI in 2 weeks to begin investigating it. Although I'm sure I have it and I've almost come to terms with it, what terrifies me most is the thought of going further downhill before I'm even diagnosed. Hopefully these issues stabilise soon and I can recuperate a bit but right now it still feels as if each day I wake up worse than the last! Scariest time of my life by far.

Flowers how awful Tavelo.
So sorry to hear this. Hopefully you will be able to get a quick diagnosis and treatment plan.

ladyandthechocolate · 25/04/2021 21:56

@Tavelo has Guillain-Barre been ruled out? It sounds as if it is progressing quite quickly.

Funsize123 · 25/04/2021 21:59

Couldn’t read and run. I have MS and have done for a long time. Please feel free to PM me if you have questions x

Tavelo · 25/04/2021 22:01

@ladyandthechocolate yes many things have been ruled out including that. I was actually hoping it would be that as although it is a risky thing, most people make a good recovery afterwards.

I'm just hoping that what I'm currently experiencing is what they call a relapse, which means I am able to bounce back at least somewhat and also treatments are more effective at showing the disease if it is still in a relapsing/remitting phase.
