To be 40+ and clueless about career

Writing here for traffic..
I have had a long break from work 7+ years. I am completely clueless about how to get back in work.
I am afraid of making a wrong decision. I keep changing my mind from one field to another.
I get interested about a new field/hobby and then get bored. I tend to want to give up when things start getting hard. How do I commit myself to one thing and not change mind. I am generally a very curious person and have various interests, and have a good overall knowledge of different subjects, but no expertise in one area.I feel embarrassed to say I was good in studies years ago, now feel fear of failure. I also feel my age is against me.
Please can anyone offer any advice. Thank you

I'm not sure I can help but wanted to say your age doesn't have to be a barrier. I've only just figured out what I want to do - I turned 40 last year.

It's a career that combines a few academic interests of mine and draws on my previous experience. It means I'm working alongside my previous career, which is weird because I'm less senior now, but I love what I'm doing.

Equally you don't have to stick to one field. My mum had 4/5 careers over her working life, the last one she started in her 50s.

Separate your hobbies from your job. Lots of people make that mistake - doing something as a hobby doesn’t nescrssarily mean you will love it as a job.

Do you just want a job or retrain for a specific career? What have you done previously? Firstly, make sure your CV is spot on.
Then I would have a look at job sites and job agencies to see what's out there.
While 40s certainly isn't too old to retrain, it is probably too old to experiment a lot. I would try to secure a job first. You can still make it into a career, if it's what you want.
I had a similar career break and started looking for anything within a certain mileage/ salary range and there really wasn't much but some jobs sounded really interesting and I could have imagined working and developing in this areas, had I gotten and enjoyed the job.
