I'm self employed and work exclusively from home. I have a lot Product coming in and out all day, and the product is quite valuable and might be left on the doorstep occasionally or somewhere in the front yard. Our area is a little rough and I've had a surveillance system set up that overlooks our front door, the garden, and looks out towards the street to capture basically any wrongdoers pulling up in the street. It's really visible as its main purpose is to deter.

A few days ago our neighbours across the street came over and accused me of spying on their family. They're unhappy about the security system, and claim that I'm "watching them" all day. My desk overlooks the our front garden and the street, so I guess they can see me during the day but I'm certainly not watching them (though their adult DS are extremely fit and might gawp at them occasionally).

I could probably ignore them but DH has sided with them and demanded that I take the cameras down? He also suggests its creepy. I am honestly shocked by inability to back me on this issue. I am the higher earner and My product pays our sizeable mortgage and supports his honestly pretty extravagant lifestyle, so I do feel I have the moral high ground here.

@HollowTalk

Huge mortgage in a rough neighbourhood and a flashy husband and a shirtless young neighbour.

Hmm

my thoughts exactly

Stringer Bell - google it.

it's important to me that it can see cars that pull up broadly on the street not just who enters the property

Why? And why does your desire for this view trump your neighbours' right to privacy? And why are you rewatching the footage? Has anything actually gone missing?

PlayerOne · 16/04/2021 11:46

Flip the sexes here and this does sound really pervy tbh - Would you like your husband watching CCTV footage of semi-naked neighbours' daughters washing cars?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/04/2021 11:46

Look at the ICO info on cctv.

Your neighbours are right. You can't cover the street without certain legal requirements having been met, and maybe not even then

Just Google it.

@Palavah

Alright, Stringer Bell.

YANBU to protect your product.
YABU to have intrusive CCTV at a much wider range than is necessary to protect your product.

There are lots of videos of shirtless men washing cars available on the internet.

HTH.

Just spat my tea out at Stringer Bell 😆😆😆

OP, make sure you're in when your "product" arrives and answer your door, or get some office space. And stop perving at their sons, it's weird.

Comefromaway · 16/04/2021 11:52

Is your business correctly registered with the ICO for CCTV and do you have a notice up with the proper wording? At work we have cameras pointing onto the street but we have to have policies in place.

which does occasionally feature the neighbour's DS quite prominently - they sometimes shirtlessly work on cars...

You are only allowed to record your own land. If you capture any public land or others property you are then bound by GDPR regulations.

I suggest you review the information commissioners office website as it explains all about CCTV restrictions.

Strictly any neighbour you film can demand a subject access request from you, there are also rules on how you store and delete footage with GDPR.

However, if your camera only films your own front door that's different and I'd invite your neighbour to view the footage so they can see it only films your land. But given your comments about their son, I doubt this is the case.

Seriously?

Fallsballs · 16/04/2021 14:50

I'm sure you could manage to take down the (imaginary) cameras with your hairy hands OP.

Kaptain · 16/04/2021 14:52

Maybe hire an office instead? I think YABU.

Maybe taking down the cameras would help
