To expect posties to sign when the item is actually delivered?

Been waiting for a parcel (special delivery before 1pm) all morning. Nice weather so sat in the front garden to make sure I didn't miss them knocking. At 1225 I got an email notification that the parcel has been delivered, and due to the type of delivery it has been signed. Obviously at the moment posties are signing themselves and not getting the customer to do it - I'm fine with this normally but isn't what has happened here. I called Royal Mail to ask what's going on and they said a lot of posties are signing when they pick up the parcels rather than when they are delivered to save time. I don't think this is okay really - if it doesn't arrive now, the store I bought it from is going to say the tracking says it arrived and has been signed for? This is a fairly expensive birthday item for dc and Royal Mail couldn't have been any less concerned about it. They said if there is a dispute re something showing as delivered they have to wait 24 hours since it was marked as delivered to look into it. AIBU in thinking that this is crap and that they shouldn't be doing this?
