Scots who usually go to the Fringe. Will you go this year?

Just read that its apparently on in 2021. I usually love going over for a few days of shows, mooching and day-drinking but feel odd about it this year.

YABU - I'll be going. If it's allowed to go ahead, it'll be safe.
YANBU - I'll give it a pass this year.

I stay away as it ruins the city. So much nicer to go when it’s not packed out.

Cautionsharpblade · 14/04/2021 22:49

Do you only want replies specifically from Scottish people? People travel from all over the world for it.

CarrieBlue · 14/04/2021 23:02

Are only Scots allowed to go to the fringe? Edinburgh is accessible from other parts of the U.K. and even the rest of the world

Blankiefan · 14/04/2021 23:03

@Cautionsharpblade I really hope people wont be travelling to it. 😯 I assumed it'd just be Scots. Maybe British people at a push.

@CarrieBlue. People aren't even allowed out of their council area in Scotland at the moment. The idea of travel is very far from our current reality so seems alien.

No. I loved it as a child but after living there it always feels sooooo busy.

Moved back to the West Coast. I might visit next year .. or the year after ..

We are on Friday and rUK travel on the 26th of April so not really at a push for people from other parts of the UK to attend a festival in August!

Its all outside this year we are planning on having a look when more is announced and if we want to see something will make a trip of it.

gingerscot · 14/04/2021 23:12

I’m a short train ride away and definitely hope to there this year. I expect there’ll be little in the way of international visitors this year, so don’t expect it to be quite as busy as usual.

I live in Edi and love the fringe (a rare breed I know! Wink). We were just chatting about it today to see if we’d go, as my DC are now a perfect age to enjoy the kiddy shows, but I don’t know if they’ll be happening. I would much rather go to the shows IRL than just watch online. For me fringe is about the vibes and the beer gardens and soaking up the atmosphere, as well as the shows, and so I just don’t know if it will be the same?
Sidenote - all the locals who complain about it do my head in! There are plenty of places to still go in the city that avoids the crowds...

Dressinggownchic · 15/04/2021 01:23

DH and I have both attended the fringe all of our adult lives... before we me, throughout our pre dc days and then when the kids were 3/4 onwards. We missed it last year and will be sad to miss it again this year but have no desire to be in an overcrowded city, sleep in a hotel, use public transport (or indeed pay through the nose to park!) etc.
Fingers crossed for 2022!

SettlerofCatan · 15/04/2021 02:41

We live in the south west but bought a flat in the old town early last year just because we love the fringe and Edinburgh in general soooooo much and then COVID hit.. hey ho. I would love there to be some shows this year, my favourites are down at the cowgate etc where it’s just 3 or 4 of us and a terrible or brilliant comedian and then a drink in one of the open air bars with some great street food ... happy days.

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 15/04/2021 02:53

I legit read that as fridge as it was underneath the teenagers and food one.

AgentProvocateur · 15/04/2021 04:10

Is it definitely on? I know there’s a very scaled down festival programme, but I haven’t heard about the Fringe. If it is, I’ll be going through at the weekends.

CarrieBlue · 15/04/2021 08:02

@Blankiefan the festival and fringe are in august, if there’s still U.K. travel restrictions then the festival and fringe won’t be viable as the participants won’t be there let alone sufficient numbers of punters. It’s not a local event for local people.

Scottishskifun · 15/04/2021 08:03

Yes at outdoor venues only.
Doidontimmm · 15/04/2021 08:07

I’m local and nope, I avoid it and even more so this year. More than happy for crowds of tourists to risk it though.

katiedidnt · 15/04/2021 08:09

They're streaming some of the shows this year. I might go to some of those, but I'm not going to travel for it.

Wormwoodgal · 15/04/2021 10:03

We’re in England and we’re going! We visit Edinburgh every August, even last year when there were no festivals (and it was lovely!). It’s such a great city at any time of year (we don’t just visit in August) and we have bought a flat there to retire to.

AgentProvocateur · 15/04/2021 12:15

That’s exciting @Scottishskifun! Thanks for letting me know.

Doidontimmm · 15/04/2021 14:56

The one thing I do love is the tattoo which is going ahead this year with less seating than usual. It’s spectacular!
