To be annoyed that I'm stuck with this

I never had any problems with my back pre hold ten. Once I was pregnant with my DD I started to get SPD and was referred to a physio which helped slightly but I still ended up on crutches. Then when I was 35 weeks I fell down the stairs, managed to grab the banister on the way down and basically ended up landing on my bum on the side of the skirting board. Went to hospital ect but luckily baby was ok. After I had baby it became obvious that something was still wrong, went to the gp who said I had probably damaged my coccyx.
For 10 months I just couldn't sit down for more than 5 mins without being in excruciating pain. I was told to use a special cushion which I did and also had more physio.
Then got pregnant with my DS and again had SPD which was again referred to physio. After having him I then got the pain again and couldn't sit for any period of time. My dr referred me for an X-ray to check that my bone wasn't broken or anything, waited 3 weeks for the appointment to be told when I got there that they won't X-ray someone of my age (30) in the pelvic region because of the risk for fertility. I begged them to still do it as I'm 100% done with having children (love my two but have very difficult pregnancies) but they wouldn't budge. Now I've been told that there is basically nothing they can do.
I'm only 30 and I am in so much pain every time I sit down for more than a few minutes. Has anyone experienced this and if so what did you do? It's really getting me down that I feel like I'm going to have to live with this pain forever

Consider seeing a chiropractor, mctimoney.

Have an open mind as a lot of people deride it. My other half is one and quite simply it works and can alleviate pain from a whole manner of places.

If you can afford it perhaps seek a private referral for an x Ray. Or speak with your GP again and your local trust, put in a complaint regarding the fact they are essentially refusing you treatment because of your age and sex when you have 2 children and are a fully fledged adult who is satisfied you do not wish to have any more children and you are willing to take the risk.

This shoiod not be their decision to make, as long as they explain all risks to you then you shouod be allowed to make the decision to proceed with the x Ray.

Sorry to hear you're in so much pain

Passthesauce · 14/04/2021 21:16

Private physio specialising in women's health might also be worth a look.

I saw one after I was still suffering 3.5 years after my 4th pregnancy and it was a revelation. Just wish I'd done it sooner (had SPD increasingly early from second pregnancy onwards and just kept being told it would sort itself when I delivered!).

Not sure where you are but can recommend one in SE (Herts) if any good.

Sleepisoverrated150 · 14/04/2021 21:21

Is it in the bottom of your coccyx when you sit on a hard surface?

I have this it’s made worse from child birth, I remember damaging it as a child and it’s never been the same since. Mine is no where near as bad as yours, I find softer items for sitting down aren’t nearly as bad a hard surface.

One thing that’s has helped is pelvic floor exercise. Even when it’s really painful I try to do some of those as i think it’s getting slightly better 🤞

Orangeinmybluelightcup · 14/04/2021 21:29

I didn't have this, had other stuff, I ended up seeing a private physio who happened to specialise in spinal injuries and she's really turned things around for me. Had been misdiagnosed twice before I went to her. It's £35 per session, I can book in for a couple of sessions when I need it but generally manage the situation using exercises she's shown me at home unless I have a flair up.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 14/04/2021 21:32

I'd complain. They are making the choice to put potential children above pain. And in my opinion, as a competent adult, that is your choice to make, not theirs.

Marpan · 14/04/2021 21:35

I had a private pelvic MRI at 29 for the same reasons. Was in a wheelchair during pregnancy from 23 weeks.

nanbread · 14/04/2021 21:37

I went to see a chiropractor with a similar issue, they are one of few practitioners who is experienced in manipulating your coccyx via the anus... I didn't go for it (!) but they claimed it was a good option and it's definitely not made up Grin

lunepremiere79 · 14/04/2021 21:39

That sounds awful, OP! I've had SPD and it's just the worst. Check this out too www.equilibriahealth.com.au/blog/coccydynia-tailbone-pain-cant-sit-syndrome/

It does sound like you need to see a private physio therapist. Also have you tried sitting on a yoga ball instead of a chair - it really helps, as you are not putting pressure on your tailbone. You can get one really cheaply on amazon.

TankFlyBoss · 14/04/2021 21:39

I fractured my coccyx in my teens. It took several months to heal and stop being painful and I could only sit down on a cushion as getting back up was incredibly painful. I sort of had to do it sideways. It took ages to get better, but in the end it did... occasionally I've had the odd twinge ever since but nothing to get excited about. Wish you well with it - it was unpleasant and wouldn't wish it on anyone. Hopefully you will recover soon xx

Whatkatyforgottodo · 14/04/2021 21:40

Following as I’ve had coccyx pain for the last six months but no idea why?! Hoping you get some good advice on here!

lunepremiere79 · 14/04/2021 22:08

Also what about an mri instead of an xray? Its not harmful and should be a good option for you to get to the bottom of this. You are in pain daily, its simply not good enough that they have given up. Please complain, stand up for yourself!

AlmostAJillSandwich · 14/04/2021 22:22

Watching with interest, i damaged mine when i was 11, still in agony when sitting for more than 5 minutes 20 years later :(

Brokenrecord3006 · 14/04/2021 22:32

I was going to suggest pushing for an mri scan and can see someone else has suggested it. I've had two to see what was going on with my lower back and hips and on both occasions they found issues that they wouldn't have found otherwise.

SpongeCakeAddict · 14/04/2021 22:36

MRI.
I had one last summer.
And push for this. This is your body and it's not their decision.

Lou98 · 14/04/2021 22:40

If you can afford it I would also recommend a chiropractor! Pre pregnancy I seen one regularly for my sciatica flare ups and other problems and it worked wonders. I have developed SPD this pregnant and if I have problems caused by this after giving birth (currently 34 weeks) I'll definitely be going back to him!

Also could you ask for an MRI if they're not willing to X-ray? MRI's are safe for use in pregnancy so can't see why they wouldn't be for this

poorsole · 14/04/2021 22:48

Second the suggestion of a McTimoney chiropractor, it's like magic Smile

PrincessPeaPod · 14/04/2021 22:53

I also had SPD with my first pregnancy, baby was born back to back. I was in agony , my coccyx was constantly on fire and I couldn't sit or lay down at an angle. I mentioned the pain at my 6 week check up, Dr was great and sent me for physio. I had damaged the coccyx during labour and they suspected a light fracture with brusing. I had infrared laser treatment and acupuncture. It took a while to get better but it did! Definitely get a physio referral. I still get the odd twinge but the treatment I had really helped. I was able to sit properly and lift my baby with no pain. I hope you can get it sorted soon.

UsuallyJustLurk · 14/04/2021 22:56

You have my full sympathy, it's such a tricky area to treat. I fell down the stairs when I was pregnant (baby was fine) but I badly hurt my coccyx. The rest of my pregnancy was agony (a special cushion did help) but then I caused more damage to it giving birth (forceps), I even felt it crack Shock. I was never x-rayed even after giving birth but I'm fairly sure I fractured it at least once! I was referred for physio soon after the birth once my tear had healed and then was offered acupuncture by the physio. I was sceptical but was in agony so gave it a go (NHS). I had about 6 sessions and after each session it was feeling more and more better as time went on. It's been 4 years now and I still use my special cushion for work as I sit a lot (from Amazon for about £10) but I only get pain now if I sit on a very hard surface for too long, and even then the pain recedes as soon as I get up. Not like how it was soon after the injury! That first year was awful, so I know how bad it must be. Keep pushing for treatment, they treated mine as if it was broken even without knowing so I'd hope that's still possible, even if they won't X-ray you. Good luck!

askingrandomsonlinemighthelp · 14/04/2021 23:02

How long has it been? I damaged mine 20 years ago. For the first three years, I really felt it. Pelvic floor exercise helps, sitting on your side, cushions, walking, painkillers, hot bath, water aerobics. Mine just went eventually. I remember feeling the way you do. Awful pain. I still don't sit properly. I always have one leg tucked under me as then my "monkey's tail" isn't bearing weight.

I0NA · 14/04/2021 23:02

I’m another person who saw a chiropractor ( in desperation ) with back pain. I didn’t believe in any of it but I’d tried everything else, including physiotherapy ( which I was lucky to get on the NHS).

I felt even more skeptical after I’d been - they don’t seem to “ do “ very much, there’s lots of pressing in weird places and banging of tables. I thought I’d wasted my money TBH.

I went away with a sheet of exercises which I did religiously, but I didnt expect much.

But the next day my back was much better. I went again and again and it got better still.

I think I had about 8 treatments, maybe 10. So a total cost of a few hundred pounds. Best money I’ve ever spent in my whole life.

I’m now pretty much pain free and I have a full range of movement. I go back occasionally as soon as I have the slightest twinge - which is perhaps every 12-18 months.

wantingtostop · 15/04/2021 05:53

Thank you for all the replies! To answer a few of the questions:
It's been 4 years since the pain started. Yes it's painful when I sit on hard surfaces but I get pain sitting anywhere now even on a sofa.
I have tried a chiropractor in the past, it really helped for a couple of days but then the pain came back just as bad.
Thank you for all the suggestions of an MRI I hadn't thought about that. Is that something I can request from the GP or would I need to go private?

Ask your GP to refer you to an orthopaedic consultant. I’m 10 years in suffering with my back and coccyx region so I fully understand. Mine was down to something like coccyididia (wrong spelling) inflammation around that area it was explained to me. I’m still on pain meds now. Good luck!
