To ask what your goal salary is?

Hi all, just being nosey here Grin

I have been thinking a lot about career progression and asking for a raise lately, and that got me thinking about what my goal salary is. As in, the salary that I would like to earn at the peak of my career (let's say between age 40 and 50).

So I will ask: what would your goal salary be?

I won't share mine for now just because I don't want to influence the answers, but I will happily share it later on.

I'm on £60k now but would like to get in excess of today's £80k

supermoonrising · 14/04/2021 20:06

Me and partner work part time hours, about 15 hours a week each, also equal parenting and domestic stuff. Work from home self-employed, combined 200k. More than ever dreamt of already, but will keep trying to improve professionally and see what happens, but won’t sacrifice time for money.

Luckyelephant1 · 14/04/2021 20:07

In excess of 100k for me. But equally I think I'd be just as happy on my existing salary but mortgage and loan free.

I'm absolutely not prepared to do the work to get to a mega salary so it seems a bit futile to aspire to one. It would be great to earn my current salary of 45k-ish over 3 days instead of 5.

moreofalurker · 14/04/2021 20:10

As much as possible doing as little as possible. While still been there for my kids. That's the dream!
The reality is have enough to pay Mortage/rent all bills and food make sure kids are dressed and want for morning.

You have to be joking surely? Not enough? How greedy

gwenneh · 14/04/2021 20:12

And I'd probably have to dress in something other than jeans, or wake up early. Noooo ;)

Not since the pandemic hit. :D Helps that I'm not customer-facing, though.

Going up a step or two would require me to do the whole polished business look and I've never been very good at that, can't be bothered.

Laggartha · 14/04/2021 20:13

My aspiration is to earn £25k per annum and not a penny more.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 14/04/2021 20:19

I've opted for living in a cheap part of the country and not upgrading to a bigger house (although it tempting) so my income goes further as I'm mortgage free. I would like to earn 30k so my take home is a round 2k.

I reached my first goal this week and have hit 26k which puts me over the amount eligible for Tax credits. I'm a single aren't and I've worked hard and retrained to be self sufficient and not reliant on them so that feels good.

FartleBarfle · 14/04/2021 20:21

I am on 45k now. I live a nice enough life on that. I am not desperate for more but I wouldn't mind it! I don't have a goal salary - I keep thinking my goal would be 60-65k but I imagine once I got there I would be looking for the next step... Then again I assume once I get beyond that the work-life balance starts to skew a little too much.

Drunkenmonkey · 14/04/2021 20:22

@Anonymous111 yes it's ridiculous.

Genuinely can't believe a) how much people claim to earn and b) that people care so much about it.
I work public sector, will never earn over 40k doing what I'm doing but I really enjoy my job and have great flexibility with working hours and annual leave which I value a lot.

CommandoDog · 14/04/2021 20:30

@notalwaysalondoner are you a senior manager or a director - dh was able to achieve a better work-life balance as a Director - he had more influence over the location of work he did.

Laggartha · 14/04/2021 20:31

@Anonymous111 I think I understand Flowers

FastFood · 14/04/2021 20:34

I'm on £70k and I'm more than happy with my salary, everything more will be great but I'm more after the achievements than the salary at this stage of my career.

Exactly the same as Dh. He will never earn Mega bucks but he works for a local authority doing something he knows helps children and their parents and he enjoys. He gets flexi time everyday, as much or little overtime as he wants, excellent pension, toil hours so he gets a ton of time off.

Sometimes the benefits pay off.

CommandoDog · 14/04/2021 20:43

@Anonymous111 my sister and my bil own 4 houses - they have an enormous amount of savings too - but for my bil it is never enough and not because he is greedy - his spending is very modest verging on the mean but because he never feels financially secure, he can't enjoy all his hard work. After years working in corporate banking, while my sister was a sahm. He now works for the Salvation Army as a financial counsellor - and my sister has taken her turn with the big bucks job - but he just can't relax about money.

alwayslearningsomethingnew · 14/04/2021 20:43

Millions

alwayslearningsomethingnew · 14/04/2021 20:44

But obviously not through a salary

Inneedoflifeadvice · 14/04/2021 20:45

Well I'm currently on a very low (disability allowance) income so even £15,000 would be amazing for me in the next few years; ultimately I'd love to earn £45k+ and be able to easily afford rent, food and a holiday each year.

StripedLeopard · 14/04/2021 20:46

I earn 26k, the mortgage is paid off and I'm happy. A higher salary would be nice but the additional stress wouldn't

idontlikealdi · 14/04/2021 20:46

The salary on qualification in my firm is 71 exc bonuses and we are far from the highest paying.

I would expect to earn 150 + bonus in the end.

FartleBarfle · 14/04/2021 20:48

@Remy7

It's so different between the disparity private and public sector but there are drawbacks to earning more. It's less stable, and you don't get as many benefits. I am on 45k for a relatively junior role - I'm classed as middle management but I don't line manage anyone. Most people I work with are on 55-60k. Senior management on 70k+

I work in the tech industry so software development etc. It's pays very highly for what you do. But it's so bloody dullz I can't get passionate about it!
