Having seen the way that people were riding the things in other parts of the country, I knew that it was only a matter of time before someone was seriously hurt. AIBU to think that they should be better regulated?

They are but they are already here. Grandfather rights and all that. Introducing something new is quite different. Cars are also heavily regulated and traced.

They are banned, never mind not regulated, but people seem not to care, and the police just ignore it.

I find them bloody lethal. I wouldn’t mind if they went on the roads and only risked themselves but they’re all over the pavements!

They're already illegal to use unless you're on public land or in one of the areas that's participating in a trial run of public hire.

That doesn't stop people riding them on roads and pavements though. Agree it needs more enforcement but so do many things and our police forces have been severely underfunded for ages.

Unless you're on PRIVATE land, sorry. Illegal on public land.

Aren’t they trialing them so they can become legal, I seriously hate the thought of them all over the pavements, there is already so maybe of them despite being “illegal” that I have to dodge as they just come speeding towards you ☹️

Yes they should be better regulated. But no, they shouldn't be illegal. They're economical, green, convenient, and overall not an inherent danger. They shouldn't be on pavements either. There should be 2 classes, 1) 12.5 mph and below, avg short journey, and 2) higher powered near motorbike/car replacements.

Are they inherently dangerous as some media outlets hype them up to be (for clicks, views) no. Wear safety gear and ride them as you would a bike, with respect to others and NOT on pavements etc.

Sorted 👍🏼

A colleague of mine got pulled over for riding one home on the pavement and the police took it off him and impounded it.

If he's really lucky he won't get 6 points as well.

My 6ft 2" son got knocked off his feet by one of these as he left a shop a couple of months ago.

They're silent, dangerous and shouldn't be on pavements.

Illegal on pavement. If your town is trialling them (my town has had them for almost 2 yrs) it’s legal to use your own scooter aswell. Bloody dangerous the way they ride them weaving in and out of traffic

Yes, they are inherently dangerous to the rider. Hit a pothole with that small a wheel and the chances are you're off.

You cannot use your own scooter even if there is a trial.

They have them in Auckland, available to hire for short journeys, and they're a bloody menace. People riding on pavements too fast and weaving on and off pavements without looking properly.

Report

Springchickpea · 02/06/2021 21:55

We have a trial here and they are a bloody menace. Always in the road, causing traffic jams, often being ridden by teens in school uniform (apparently not possible but there you go). It’s a big student city and it’s a nightmare.

Report

DynamoKev · 02/06/2021 21:56

Around here (we are not in a trial area) they are in active use by scum who ride around recklessly without a single shit given and are totally ignored by Police.

Report

DynamoKev · 02/06/2021 21:58

Then again almost nothing in relation to bikes cars etc is enforced around here. I hardly ever see a cop car - I do see people driving on the phone, speeding and with illegal cars and motorbikes every single day.

There's so many around here.. scooting at dangerous speeds on pavements. It's like a new craze.
I hate it as do so many others around here but nothing is done about it.
Needs someone to be horribly injured or worse for anyone to listen.

HypeD80 · 02/06/2021 22:03

The wheel can be susceptible to major potholes, but it's not typically an inherently dangerous ride. Diligence and awareness go a long way.

MaizeBlouse · 02/06/2021 22:09

The worst thing I've seen is parents picking thier kids up from nursery and riding home with the child holding on! This is 3 or 4 year olds too and I've seen this multiple times. It's lethal.
