AIBU to order from Ubereats?

We usually order direct, but once in a while Ubereats sends a 50% off code so we order through them. When we go to collect, they tell us to order direct ! One even had a go at me yesterday!

AIBU to order from Ubereats??

Some restaurants only use Uber eats and other 3rd parties as they don’t have the knowledge, the technology, or the staff to do it themselves. Particularly if they are just starting out or are unsure about new technology.

They tend to have to increase prices to pay the 3rd parties or risk going out of business. All takeaways would prefer your business direct if possible. If you like them, try and do that where possible.

Imagine you pay £6 for a curry, Uber eats gets almost £2 plus the apx £3? delivery fee to pay the driver.

The restaurant only gets £4 and from that they have to pay the rent on the shop, the ingredients for the dish including seasonings, oil etc, the chef, including their pension, national insurance and holiday pay, the cleaning staff, blue roll, sanitiser, the business rates and permits, the gas and electric, the boxes and napkins and forks and sauce sachets, insurance, marketing costs like flyers and Facebook ads. Oh and of course VAT is normally 20% so that’s already £1 from the total.

Barbera is right. Just Eat are absolutely raking it in.

I had no idea how much Ubereats earned from restaurants using their service!

YANBU. If I have a discount then I will use it. I'm sure that's how I initially started using UE, from a friend's money-off referral code.

EggysMom · 13/04/2021 18:51

Hmmmm.
Two takeaways I use regularly through Just Eat, have asked me to order direct from their website. I tried it. One takeaway, it didn't accept my credit card so defaulted to cash before confirming the order, leaving me raiding my son's piggybank for the money. The second, the order seemed to go through okay and I got an email confirmation but phoned an hour later to find they hadn't received my order. Never had such problems with Just Eat, so I'm going back to using them.

I tend to use Uber for the big companies like MacDonalds. But for my favourite local places I will order direct.

Also the big companies pay a lot less than 30% as they have a lot more bargaining power. I avoid JustEat as they make it difficult to tip the driver, unlike Deliveroo and Uber who let you tip on the card.

Lockheart · 13/04/2021 18:57

You are (presumably) an adult - what's unreasonable about ordering from a legal and widely available service?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 13/04/2021 18:59

I remember when deliveroo was starting. Some businesses got bloody good deal with 15% because Deliveroo needed to build up offering.
Now they offer to deop their sometimes even 30% bit down if you don't work with Uber eats.
And they are very quick to refund. I am changing a cuisine here to keep it vague ha, we had a situation when we sent out food and then deliveroo called that 2 papadoms (not really) were missing ao they will refund the £30 quid order. She couldn't understand why I was arguin that it's 1- bloody stupid and 2-I have a cctv proof that pappadoms were sent. She just kept repeating they weren't and that they want to refund. My blood pressure took a while to come down after most conversations with Deliveroo🙄😂

They are a fucking pita allowing customers claim refunds on regular basis. Apparently they are now trying to crack down on people who complain professionally to eat for free. Who knows. They are so big they don't need to care anymore.

At least just eat offers two different commission choices. 14% if you don't use their drivers, I think it's 25 if you do.

If you aren't with them 3... It's like you aren't at all🤷🏻

I think the industry needs to bite back by getting with the times and having a service as good as the apps.

The problem of course is that local takeaways aren’t going to make some guy wait in their car round the corner for an order while not being paid until he picks up. But the gig economy is a whole other thread!

StillCoughingandLaughing · 13/04/2021 19:51

Ordering direct is all well and good if you have a favourite takeaway (or a few favourites) and aren’t interested in trying anywhere else. My parents are now Uber Eats converts thanks to the special offers they get, but when I initially suggested trying it, looked at me with bewilderment and said ‘But why wouldn’t we just ring The Lotus Garden?’ And if you know you want the same thing you’ve had from The Lotus Garden every time you’ve ever ordered, then yes, you may as well do exactly that.

For me, the key benefit of Uber Eats, Deliveroo etc. is choice. I can click Indian or Chinese and instantly see 30+ options. I can try new things, and someone will always a have a special offer running. These apps also tend to open up a wider delivery area - whereas in the old days most takeaways just said ‘free delivery within three miles on orders over £20’ or similar, takeaways can set delivery prices according to distance with Deliveroo, so if I don’t mind paying a bit extra, I can try somewhere I actually couldn’t order from directly.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/04/2021 20:00

@SchrodingersImmigrant

It sounds like you run a takeaway? Who pays for all these special offers that @StillCoughingandLaughing talks about? Is it Deliveroo etc or does the use of an offer reduce even further the money the restaurant gets paid? If that's the case, that further reduces my opinion of them.

Sparklfairy · 13/04/2021 20:14

I've managed to find and try loads of new places as a result of Uber Eats and using the 50% off code. Last week I ordered lunch from an amazing Indian street food place that I had no idea existed. They slipped a menu into the bag and next time I'll probably just order direct. The thing is, if it wasn't for these apps, takeaways would have to pay a lot for independent advertising, so I don't think for the initial sale, if the service and food is good, 30% fee or whatever is that bad if it keeps people coming back.

Yapplepearora · 13/04/2021 20:16

@SchrodingersImmigrant. I always check the location of any new takeaways I try on these platforms now as loads of new ones have popped up in my town apparently which I have never seen. When I look them up on Google maps they appear to be registered in people’s flats Hmm

SchrodingersImmigrant · 13/04/2021 20:16

@BarbaraofSeville not really anymore but still around them.

They cover the discount. Unless it's only a specific offer done by the restaurant. They fuck you up different ways🙈

What lots of people miss though is that lots of places don't do their normal offers on these platforms (not worth it) so it's always good to check direct. Might actually workout better.

But yes. Pp has a point with the quality of some websites, unfortunately, some places have really low budgets compared to bigger ones. But I get the annoyance.

It's all gone wild now🙄
The amount of people cooking from home large quantities of food is concerning. Home cooking is perfectly safe on normal level, but handling properly large amounts of ingredients is different kettle of fish.

There are also deliveroo kitchens. It's just a kitchen, nothing else somewhere. That's how they get some brands and restaurants into the area without problems with individual planning etc.

Though jsut eat, uber and deliveroo used to want x food hygiene rating to list. Not sure if they relaxed it over lockdown. I know someone awaiting inspection who is on just eat so probably yeah.

LadyCatStark · 13/04/2021 20:41

@ShrodingersImmigrant, they can’t possibly be on JE if they don’t have a food hygiene rating or a shop front.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 13/04/2021 20:46

@LadyCatStark I don't know about a shop front for just eat, but yes. I eas surprised "awaiting inspection" was ok. Normally it's not. At least we had to prove ours couple of years back.

This is funny, Joe Lycett opens a takeaway in a skip and joins Uber eats

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/04/2021 16:30

That's hillarious😂😂😂
I am pretty sure we had to provide the registration to at least one of the three and if i remember correctly at least one wanted the rating.
It was few years ago so I might have it confused 🙈
