AIBU to ask how do you clean a kitchen?!

Can't believe I'm asking this, I'm really embarrassed, but here goes.

How do you clean your kitchen?! What products do you use, do you use one of those scrubby sponge things, or the mop up sponge things, or something else? Do you fill the sink with hot water and disinfectant and dip your sponge in there, or do you just spray, wipe, and rinse your chosen implement under the sink?

How on earth are you even meant to use Zoflora? I've tried mixing it with warm water and squirting it on the tops but it just resulted in wet tops which took ages to mop/sponge off and dry, and didn't really feel like a proper clean.

I've heard of so many different ways of cleaning kitchens, I don't think I'm doing it right ... we always seem to have crumbs in the corners, water marks on the hob.

Please don't judge me for asking. I didn't really have a role model growing up to see this for myself.

OP posts:

Squirt of washing up liquid and splash of zoflora in the basin, run the hot water into it. Clean cloth in it, wring it out, wipe all the counter tops, hob and table. Done.

1Morewineplease · 12/04/2021 21:43

I generally rinse a cloth in warm water, spray surfaces with a kitchen cleaner and then wipe away.
I'll use a scrubby sponge on anything greasy or a bit of spilled food .
Rinse the cloth a few times.
I'd use a scrubby thing with an extra spray of cleaner for the backsplash/tiles behind the hob.

Jumpers268 · 12/04/2021 21:44

Zoflora isn't actually for cleaning but a disinfectant. I use elbow grease for cleaning the kitchen. Literally all of the kitchen haha. With a sponge. Spray, wipe (scrub) and then use a tea towel to dry. I then use a Dettol wipe to disinfect but it's probably (really not) necessary.

I have a system! Too to bottom always!

Dust the ceiling corners/light fixtures.
Clean windows (mix of white vinegar/water in spray bottle and microfiber window cloth). Use this for light switches too.
Move everything off of each counter top. Spray with mix of Fairy and warm water and wipe/scrub (I use old towels cut up). Wipe kettle etc at this point.
Abrasive on hob - Pink Stuff or similar. Wipe off with Fairy mix.
Clean oven with either abrasive cleaner as above or a proper leave-on oven cleaner (1x a month maybe). Wipe clean with Fairy mix.
Clean cupboard fronts with vinegar mix and window cloth (mine are gloss).
Take everything out of fridge, throw out anything that's dead, wash with warm water and Fairy. Replace.
Clean baseboards with Fairy mix and towel.
Take out bin then wash and wipe with Fairy mix.
Wipe down inside of washing machine with Fairy mix then throw cloths in.
Clean sink with abrasive, wipe with Fairy mix.
Put washing machine on.
Hoover floor.
Mop with Fairy mix.

Hope this helps!

Oh and I do this once a week. Takes ages at first but once you've been doing it for a few weeks nothing ever really gets that dirty so you can whiz through it in 20 mins or so.

Tigerstripe20 · 12/04/2021 22:01

Bottle of elbow grease spray from Home bargains or similar
Spray and leave for a couple of minutes and wipe off
Glass cleaner for hobs and glass ( obviously 😁) buff with kitchen paper
Zoflora only gets used in my house for bins
Flash mop or steam mop for floors
Dettol cucumber anti bac kitchen spray for general wipe downs

Pebbledashery · 12/04/2021 22:02

I do a mini clean most days as I'm quite a clean freak, but Saturday is the big clean. I take everything off the counter tops, hoover with the brush attachment that I only use for the kitchen then spray down with flash and wipe.. I wipe down the hob and tiles as well. I use a flash mop on the floor with the disposable pads, they are great. I did a massive spring clean today as I was off work and reorganised all the kitchen cupboards and wiped them all down. Feels so much nicer :)

Ylvamoon · 12/04/2021 22:03

Cloth & hot soapy water, dry with a linen towel. I usually do all surfaces after cooking.
No streaks, no residues or stains.

WiddlinDiddlin · 12/04/2021 22:07

Koh, Koh mop, Koh spray bottle and microfibre clothes. Bleach wipes.

Shout at OH to clean worktops of rubbish/pots/etc.

Wipe down worktops using Koh for the just dusty/crumby bits and a bleach wipe for the bits OH insists on chopping on without a chopping board because he is a twat.

Wipe down all the floor cupboard fronts - shout at OH to wipe down the wall units.

Wipe the worktops again cos now theres crap on them.

Brush floor, hoover up little bits, Koh mop floor.

Koh cleans everything, its ace.

*I use a wheelchair and don't have an accessible kitchen, so he has to do the bits i can't reach, and he does nowt without being shouted at first. I have tried asking nicely or waiting and seeing. It doesn't work.

skeggycaggy · 12/04/2021 22:11

OP, I’ve been thinking about making this post too! It’s not just you! I don’t remember my mum ever doing much cleaning (not something she was fussed about, house was perfectly adequate but not sparkly), I have a dog & cat, my house requires more housework from me but I’m a bit at a loss over it!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/04/2021 22:14

It really depends on your material. I am careful on my worktop because it's oiled wood. When I had laminate i bloody bleached it once a month😂

Good cleaning spray, blue rool is all you need for surfaces.
I like flash degreaser for cooker and tiles around it, and sink. And it smells nice.

Daily clean takes minutes incl quick hoover.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/04/2021 22:17

I honestly think that some people run into problems by jsut trying to follow all that's showned online.

You don't need to. Sometimes when I read/see somepeople's evening kitchen clean routines, they are more complicated than commercial kitchen ones!

Don't overthink. Don't think you must use all what's in. Just clean it. That's it.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/04/2021 22:17

Showned? Really.. sorry. And typos

Wriggleout · 12/04/2021 22:17

Wiry scrubber for the sink is great for getting all the tea and coffee stains off

sleepyhead · 12/04/2021 22:20

The key is using a damp cloth whatever product you use, not a sopping wet one. Dries more quickly and also more effective for scrubbing.

So whether you're using a microfibre cloth and plain water, or zoflora, washing up liquid or Flash, wrong your cloth/mop/sponge out well before you use it.

Nicpem1982 · 12/04/2021 22:21

I use cif or pink stuff on cooker and sides if I've cooked something greasy
Then I use method kitchen spray to ensure no chalky residue
Then an antibacterial spray on all sides and handles

I have a cleaner too that cleans weekly

sleepyhead · 12/04/2021 22:21

Wrong? Wring!

Never wrong your cloth.

Toomuchleopard · 12/04/2021 22:23

I use a bucket of hot water with flash liquid in for my weekly clean. I use this with Microfibre cloth on cupboard fronts, surfaces and appliances then buff up with tea towel. Also mop the floor with this. I also have a kitchen spray with degreaser for hob and splash back. Then during the week after I’ve finished washing up I usually refill the sink with clean hot water and washing up liquid and use this to wipe round.

mycatchichi · 12/04/2021 22:23

Flash spray or dettol spray with kitchen roll. Every morning and after cooking too.

IdblowJonSnow · 12/04/2021 22:24

@Ceejly
You sound very thorough! I'll pay you to do mine!

I clean my kitchen every day and mop weekly but hardly ever do the windows and oven get cleaned.

DdraigGoch · 12/04/2021 22:25

Before throwing the water away at the end of washing up, I use the sponge to wipe down surfaces. Also do inside of appliances as/when they need it. I use one of those metal scrubbers on things like the oven racks.

Floor gets swept and mopped when I get around to it.

Loveisthehope · 12/04/2021 22:26

Some great advice but don't get too overwhelmed by all you're reading. Some very clean people on here, you honestly don't need to feel bad if you do half as much as some posters suggest (not a criticism but just sounds too much in some cases)

Loveisthehope · 12/04/2021 22:27

Oh, do wash your washing up cloths frequently in hot water!

whattocallhim · 12/04/2021 22:31

Never mix any chemicals, I'm sure you know this but just thought I'd put it out there.
