To sleep on the balcony?

I know I probably AM BU but it doesn't stop me from wanting to. For as long as I can remember, I've preferred sleeping outside to sleeping inside.

I just feel more comfortable and peaceful. '

We live in Australia so you might think it would be more of a normal thing to do here...but it's not, mainly because of mosquitoes.

Some people go camping but rough it and sleep only in a tough sort of sleeping bag thing with a hood and a mosquito net called a Swag...but I don't see why I have to go into the countryside to do it...or use a swag and a net.

We moved not long ago...where we lived before did have a massive garden but a lot of mosquitoes due to a stream nearby...plus it was extra creepy there as it was an old property and the block next door had an abandoned house on it.

But here, we're right by the sea...I can see it metres away from the balcony on the second floor...and the balcony is quite private...nobody would know I was there.

AIBU to get a few blankets/duvets and something to lie on and kip there sometimes? It's Autumn here now and I love the slight chill in the air...

Cannot actually work out why you’re even asking 🤣

Sounds blissful - just do it!

eatsleepread · 12/04/2021 16:36

I'm not sure why you're asking us either, but it does sound very nice, and I'd be doing it for sure Smile

HelpMeh · 12/04/2021 16:39

YANBU but I'd be worried about creatures. All the worst ones like to come out at night, so I'd be wanting a hammock and a net.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 12/04/2021 16:41

That sounds gorgeous, yabu for not doing it!

notacooldad · 12/04/2021 16:43

Why is it being unreasonable.
Has someone told you can't?

Spaghettio · 12/04/2021 16:57

You need a daybed on the balcony. Perfect for daytime slouching, naps and big enough to sleep on at night. Get a mozzie net and you'll be good to go!

SouthOfFrance · 12/04/2021 16:58

Sounds lovely! Could you put up a net or screen type thing to keep the mosquitos and birds etc away?

DragonWillow · 12/04/2021 16:58

we often sleep in the garden during the summer

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 12/04/2021 17:00

NO YOU MAY NOT

Ignore the silly embittered men who like to hang around on aibu with the sole aim of scolding women.

I would be sleeping on my balcony if I had one.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 12/04/2021 17:03

Actually, given you're in Australia, something will probably come out of the sea and snatch you in the night. Or a giant flying spider or something.

LostInTime · 12/04/2021 17:03

Assuming it's your own balcony...why wouldn't you?

Whose scolded her and whose embitted and whise hanging round AIBU?
🤔

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 12/04/2021 17:08

I'm pretty silly, embittered and old, but last time I checked I was still a woman Grin

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 12/04/2021 17:09

Oh, just realised there was no 'old', I just added that in. So I'm ageist too...

normalsaline · 12/04/2021 17:11

YABU to have to ask mumsnet Confused

Abfabfanjo · 12/04/2021 17:14

Sounds like a delightful idea. We live on the coast (North Wales though, not New South Wales, so a bit nippy at times - no mozzies though) and during the summer it's lovely to lounge in the hammock and watch the waves, listening to music and reading.

Ijustinowitstimetogo · 12/04/2021 17:16

I’m not sure you actually are asking us. But have a nice life. Whatever.

DoubleTweenQueen · 12/04/2021 17:19

Not unreasonable at all. Have done it in Spain - taken mattresses out onto large balcony. (Have also spent the night on the dust, in a swag in the Aussie bush - amazing stars, including the Southern Star. Didn't get much sleep though because of the sound of slithering and scurrying of critters Grin Good memories)

zukiecat · 12/04/2021 17:42

It sounds amazing OP, go for it!

I can see the sea from my house too, but it's the North Sea in NE Scotland so not advisable really Grin

Mellonsprite · 12/04/2021 17:50

Very jealous as in freezing cold uk... what about snakes though?

MixedUpFiles · 12/04/2021 17:52

Could you build a little screened in room on your balcony? My parents have one of these and my mother slept out there all the time. She loved the cool night air, but also liked knowing nothing was going to crawl into her blankets or scurry across her chest.
