to go back to hospital?

In a car accident on Friday. Fortunately DC both fine. I both through my tongue (this is not for the squeamish!) and also cut it horizontally in V shape so it forms a flap. At least the size of a penny coin.

Ambulance crew told me to go to the hospital to get it stitched. Triage nurse/doctor referred me to UTC to get it stitched. Waited two hours and doctor took one look and refused to suture it. I was not even confident she realised there was a flap (as well as a hole!!!) I was too upset and in shock to argue.

Hole healing fast but four days later laminated cut is as bad as ever. Even moving my tongue to control salivar seems to aggravate it. And I’m sick of warm Weetabix, mashed potato and blended soup!

I want to go back to hospital and demand it is stitched to speed healing. AIBUally impatient?

Good grief you are NBU! Apart from anything else, isn't there a much higher risk of infection if it's not stitched??

Back to hospital & get it stitched! Christ you shouldn't have been left like that.

Often tongue injuries are just left to heal because they can heal really well on their own. Big lacerations need suturing but it can be a challenge without sedation or a GA as people really struggle to keep their mouth open and keep their tongue still!

If you are concerned go back and be seen again but to those who said it should have definitely be sutured I wouldn’t be so sure you are correct!

I think there’s a time limit on stitching due to infection risk but surely it’s worth having it looked at again!

If you’re worried I would contact your gp, they might have a look and then decide to send you but saves you having to go to hospital.
I bit through my tongue as a kid but it was a straight line. The dr just left it as he said it would heal on its own, which it did. However if I have an ice lolly it still sometimes bleeds a bit 40 years later!! Grin

Thanks for the advice. Still unsure what to do. If I understand correctly though, won’t stitch if I wait too long. I’m not a health fuss maker, I’m just concerned (a) because it was bad enough for other medical people to say it needed stitching, and (b) it’s not getting better at all. Plus I had a bad experience at same a&e with DD last year.

Pretty sure it is much too late for stitching.
