AIBU?

Houmous is five days past its use-by date

AIBU to eat one (small) pot on toast for breakfast and the other in a wrap for lunch?

Really trying hard to minimise food waste but my usual cut-off is three days, for this sort of thing...

If it smells fine it is usually fine. Just try a bit. Humous lasts a while if it is covered.

Hummus goes fizzy if it’s off. You’ll know.

FFS no. Massive risk from humous. Never ever ever eat humous past its use by. @ornge that is dangerous advice.

Omg no. I know someone who had severe food poisoning from hummus and it was within date.

My dsis was violently ill after eating out of date houmous, so I wouldn't, personally.

It can be ok. Smell, taste, see.
Mine tasted fizzy once so that's a no.

Bit unrelated...
If you are looking to really minimise waste, make sure your fridge is the right temperature and circulates air well. You can get tiny thermometers. Well working fridge saves fortune and so much food.

Houmous is weird stuff. I swear it goes off at midnight on its use by date. It's the only thing I regularly bin leftovers of as it smells bad very quickly.

Definitely no for eating out of date hummus. That's one of the things that you don't gamble on.

I threw away a past date pot of hummus the other day, the film lid was bulging and tight.

Smell it. It tends to smell a bit vinegary if it’s past it.

Urgh it will be all fizzy!

I don't follow dates the vast majority of the time but I wouldn't. Its the fact it's blended I think. I'm the same with smoothies vs fresh fruit.

I don't even bother looking at the date on houmous. If it looks/ smells fine it gets eaten.

Try a bit on your tongue. As pp have said, it tastes/feels fizzy if it's off.

DP insists on eating up all out-of-date food. When DS1 was a baby, DP decided to use up the out-of-date hummus on Christmas Eve. We had no food in the house as were going to his family on Christmas morning and then on to my family on Boxing Day. Cue DP being violently ill all night and then all of Christmas Day. I had some baby food, and luckily found an old bit of lasagne for me in the freezer drawer, but it was the most miserable Christmas. I went for a walk with DS in his pram and could see in through people's windows where they were eating Christmas dinner and having lovely time.. I did feel sorry for DP but was also cross because it was self-inflicted and I had told him not to eat it!

What ingredient is it in the houmous that makes it go off so suddenly?
I'm usually not so worried about veggie food over use by date in the fridge, only meat/fish-based products.
The meat/fish gets the sniff test & can usually push it a couple of days.
Haven't had houmous for ages - I'll be heading bravely through the 'heavy' Surrey snow to the supermarket later so might pick some up!

The best hummus is the Kasih hummus. They are tiny (120g) AND can be bought in advance because they are uht packed! And bloody delicious. So bloody delicious 😁
Highly recommended

Every so often there's a recall due to salmonella

Thanks all - I had no idea there was a particular risk from houmous! I’ve ear-marked a cereal bar for breakfast

@SchrodingersImmigrant that’s very interesting about the fridge; I’ll look into it. I’ve already sussed out the separate storage of different fruits and veg to stop condensation, which has been really good

As others have said, it can make you seriously ill. I’d consider eating it 1 day past its use by date but not 5. It does go fizzy when it’s off weirdly.
