What do I do?

I've finished work and have no job on Monday. I have £3k in savings and a 20k mortgage.

Can I go on benefits? How do I do this and how much can I get.

I'm exhausted. I just need a break

My contract finished and I put my head in the sand and ignored the fact I have no work tomorrow

Check here

Bluebird2021 · 11/04/2021 17:04

what do you mean 'finished work'?

jobseekers allowance is going to require you actively looking for work but won't pay unless you've been sacked. if you left through choice then not so sure

FenceSplinters · 11/04/2021 17:04

Can you register with some agencies tomorrow?

PotteringAlong · 11/04/2021 17:05

How long will your savings last for?

Bluebird2021 · 11/04/2021 17:05

is jobseekers now universal credit? maybe its all changed....again!

sorry to hear you are jobless op

ImInStealthMode · 11/04/2021 17:10

Get looking tomorrow OP! Literally any job you can do until you find the 'right' one will reduce the amount of savings you need to spend on living. Cleaning, retail, bar work, anything to bring in a few quid. Get yourself signed up to local recruitment / temp agencies too. All is not lost!

CatFaceCats · 11/04/2021 17:13

Of course you can go on universal credit - but you also have to be actively looking for work.
You won’t get any housing help as you have a mortgage, you haven’t mentioned if you have young children or not, so that would obviously change how much you can claim.

GreyhoundLurcher · 11/04/2021 17:16

Get another job - we're all knackerd.....

Winter2020 · 11/04/2021 17:35

If you were employed (rather than self employed) you could also look at contribution based or "new style" job seekers allowance.
www.gov.uk/jobseekers-allowance
New style JSA might be useful if for example you have a partner and their earnings are too much for you to be eligible for universal credit.

Hope you can find new work quickly. Best wishes

Chloemol · 11/04/2021 18:12

Lots of people need a break, lots don’t act so irresponsibly thought

Find another job

OldEvilOwl · 11/04/2021 18:19

It depends what you mean by finishing work. If you left a job of your own accord you may not be entitled to anything. Ring Citizens advice in the morning?

HikeForward · 11/04/2021 19:36

Left work as in a contract ended or you resigned or were made redundant?

If you have a mortgage and savings do you still qualify for any UC/benefits?

thebestnamehere · 11/04/2021 19:50

My security contract finished.

HikeForward · 11/04/2021 20:07

Did you apply for any jobs before the contract ended? If so I’d take the paperwork to the job centre with you. I’d also be prepared to have to wait a while before a Universal Credit claim is processed, especially as you own property. There are a lot of hoops to jump through and a lot of desperate people applying at the moment!

RoseyMinerals · 11/04/2021 20:44

They will pay regardless of being sacked. Ignore previous poster stating otherwise.

Northofsomewhere · 11/04/2021 22:39

What other options do you have? If you go on UC, it won't go far and you'll likely be dipping into saving every month. Do you have a partner who lives with you? What is their income? Are you able to live of their income and UC without dipping into savings? Do you have children?

I think you should apply for UC once you become unemployed? Was that technically Friday? Then start looking for jobs, it could be weeks before you get anything anyway so enough time to relax a little but you need to consider the long term. You sound potentially in a risky place financially, realistically how long can your household live off your income with UC and your savings (which presumably want to maintain)? That's assuming there's not unexpected expenses too.

I think most people will understand the exhausted feeling at the moment. I've worked out for the home during the entire pandemic and my holidays have been much needed and there's time where I've definitely felt I need more time off but sadly it's not an option unless I was genuinely unwell (mentally or physically) and you have to find ways to cope. Do you have much downtime in a week? Do you do anything for yourself? Is there a hobby you'd like to take up and find time for? Do you need to seek a GP's help if it's not related to getting enough downtime?
