To think the National Rail website should not be in black and white?

The National Rail website has moved to a black and white colour scheme presumably for the next eight days.

www.nationalrail.co.uk/

I have good eyesight yet I found it really uncomfortable to use and it strained my eyes. I can only imagine it would be even harder for those with visual impairment. The website exists to provide information; it provides a service to all.

AIBU to think that National Rail should be inclusive to those with disabilities and keep the website it full colour, rather than virtue signalling?

I personally hope they keep it (I know they won’t!), I find it much nicer to read than the bright blue and yellow it was before.

ButterflyHoneyPot · 11/04/2021 14:29

Shows full colour for me?

KoalaOok · 11/04/2021 14:34

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Grin

RustyBear · 11/04/2021 14:34

@LordEmsworth

OP hasn't explained that it's white text on a black background, which is well-known for being hard to read.

YANBU, it could have been black text on a white background and still been black & white...

Confused It is black text on a white background....

I find it easier to see. I don’t see any point in terms of respect. Flag at half mast if they have one at head office. Have collection boxes for a charity he supported, public transport based if there is one of Duke of Edinburgh award.

KoalaOok · 11/04/2021 14:35

I should get off mumsnet then as it's still blue to me.

MaMaD1990 · 11/04/2021 14:42

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Er, because the reason they did it is because someone of significance has died..? The act itself is nice and showing respect in their own way, its not that hard to grasp Confused

LordEmsworth · 11/04/2021 15:49

@RustyBear That page is. The homepage, however, is usually white text on blue but now is white text on black (well, dark grey). Not sure why you're confused? Seems pretty straightforward to me...

Mine is the same as Rusty no matter what page. Must be a user agent thing.

The vast majority of printed matter is black and white. It's a universal thing. Do you also have a problem reading books? Confused

Homepage still white on blue

I promise I haven't gone to the trouble of faking the image. When I go to the page, it turns from blue to white...

TrickorTreacle · 11/04/2021 18:00

Is this for Prince Philip, and why was '8' chosen as the number of days to display the site in black and white?

Princess Diana is more deserving of the media coverage and mourning. I lost interest in the royal family after she died, and Harry/Meghan is a shitstorm. Totally batshit.

Anyway, the site isn't in black and white for me. It's black with numerous shades of blue and the buttons are orange.

It probably depends on what device you're using.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 11/04/2021 18:05

That isn’t true black, it’s a shade of grey. 4d4d4c or something like it. Easier to read than true black.

But the site is white on dark blue normally anyway, so if there’s a usability issue, it’s a permanent one. Changing that to black instead of blue is probably as easily as pressing one button, whereas getting rid of background colours altogether may be more difficult (especially for a short-term change).

OP - I thought the site was broken this morning! I can’t say it demonstrates any particular sign of respect to my mind.

Try refreshing. When I first logged on this morning it initially came up blue as usual, but then refreshed itself to the black scheme.
EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 11/04/2021 18:14

haven't seen it. but B&W is my preferred option for contrast
Once worked for an organisation that insisted on corporate colours for screen defaults - orange font on purple! Madness

Cattitudes · 11/04/2021 18:21

Coming up as black on white for me, which is often clearer for people with visual impairment and if you suffer from visual stress use a screen filter, that often works better when on black and white. You just select the colour which suits you best.

shrumps · 11/04/2021 18:59

Oh ffs. This site gets more fucking mental by the day 😂😂😂

I actually find black on white much easier to read than colour on colour. I can read a newspaper absolutely fine without glasses but struggle with some magazines that say have green print on an orange background.

I would say colours are worse but I don't know if there are specific disabilities which make black on white worse.

poppycat10 · 11/04/2021 19:07

Actually now I see what you mean - I think the blue was easier to see.

It doesn't change my point about colour on colour in magazines, though.

Nope. It's colour for me too. I am not seeing black and white.

NativityDreaming · 11/04/2021 19:40

I agree, it is hard to read. It is possible, from a design POV, to change to block and white and non make it so hard on the eyes.

TheTrumpeter · 13/04/2021 13:16

Surprised by the final vote on here. Have just been browsing Twitter and tons of people with visual impairments have been contacting National Rail to say that the monochrome website is now inaccessible to them!
