As life expectancy improves

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 12/04/2021 09:46

For females at the turn of the millennium was 80.7 years. In 2017-19 it was 83.4. At no point during that time did it drop, but its been fairly stagnant since 2010 or 2011.

I imagine lots will.
Our parents in 70s. Grandchildren just arriving for them in the last few years.
They are fit as a fiddle. Cycle, row, walk, holidays everywhere (normally), all caught up with technology. 70 is the new 50 I think.

In my own family, my Great grandparents lived to 107, 103, and late 90s. This was despite smoking and drinking brandy like it was going out of fashion. They were farmers and had v active lifestyles and pretty healthy, natural diets.
My grand parents were late 90s or died young in the war.
My own dad died at 60, from a CVA, hugely overweight.
I struggle with my weight, have an expensive but not particularly healthy diet (I'd do better on the bit of bread and dripping of my g grandparents) I have a high stress but not very active job and I spend too much time sat on my arse.
Cant see me making it to 80.

I think it will - Europe already has an ageing population.

@TrickorTreacle

The state pension age is going up while our life expectancy is dropping. The establishment is rubbing its hands in glee as they know that most of us will be dead before we draw our pensions.
Who exactly is the "establishment". ? It sounds like some kind of shadowy secret society that controls everyone even though they don't actually know it.

If on the other hand you mean the Government then if you are correct and life expectancy is decreasing (not sure if it is - more like plateau'ing) then yes this does mean that the cost of covering pensions will reduce. The Government can then choose to spend that money elsewhere, reduce taxes on those in work who are currently paying for the retired's pensions or pay down national debt.

But the "establishment " certainly does not get to personally pocket this saving whoever the conspiratorial establishment are.

Well there’s existing and there’s living. Life expectancy should be renamed ‘existence expectancy’ because a lot of old people sure as hell aren’t living. Happy to stick around as long as I’ve got my marbles. No thanks after that.

Roonerspismed · 12/04/2021 13:58

Life expectancy for our children is decreasing due to obesity and inactivity and
, I suspect, environmental factors.

I think there will be a downward trajectory for some time sadly

StealthPolarBear · 12/04/2021 13:59

It is not decreasing! Life expectancy at birth has plateaued.

PhilCornwall1 · 12/04/2021 14:08

No way I want to live to that age!!

Fortunately, I know I won't. I can't say the quality of life I have now as far as health is concerned will make me change my mind on that.

Cocomarine · 12/04/2021 14:29

@jessstan2

My pension won't provide for 20+ years.....
......
Do pensions not pay out until you die? Mine does and I have received my late husband's since I turned sixty.

That’s quite some bubble you’re living in there!

No, the vast majority of people younger than you are not so fortunate as to have a definite benefit pension. Most will either make their defined contribution last as long as possible, or use it to buy an annuity at a fairly poor rate which will pay out indefinitely - but at a low rate.

Justanticipating · 12/04/2021 21:52

Not when cancer rates are going up and people are getting fatter and lazier, I don't just can't see how it's possible.

Nat6999 · 13/04/2021 02:20

Anyone saying I will think differently at 70 about wanting my life over, I'm severely disabled & housebound at 55. If it wasn't for my 17 year old ds I would end my life now. I don't have a life, I have an existence.

Creepygnochi · 13/04/2021 02:27

I hope not.

I personally have no interest in living past 80. Nothing good awaits you on the other side of 80. I would rather go out with my wits and bowels intact, with my loved ones remembering me as I am not as the burden I would become.
