To ask about google and algorithms

You know how google has a record of everything you’ve ever typed in to the search engine, do you think this information may (or has) ever be used to a third party?
Also you know how social media (mainly FB) uses algorithms for advertising (from stuff which you have googled), is this information sold to a third party as well? Or is this already happening without consumers knowing?
I don’t actually use SM for other reasons- just wondered what others thought?

All these resources which are useful but free have one thing in common :

You’re the product.

Yes. Everything you do on the internet is tied back to you. Welcome to the world of cookies.

For search engines, use DuckDuckGo instead of Google.

For Facebook, use a FB container extension. Firefox and Chrome both have them. It's basically sandbox for FB without any leaks to / from other web sites, so FB doesn't know what other sites you have visited.

I expect some of you will be using FB as the phone app rather than the web version. Sorry I can't help you there. Uninstall the app. You'll be glad that you did because you won't be constantly distracted by it and you can just use it on the web as and when you want to use it. Get on with your lives :-)

DuckDuckGo is super slow. Annoying slow. As bad as Ecosia.

Facebook is pretty bad at choosing adverts for me. I don't think the algorithms are worth much.

You can find out what data google has stored about you and delete it:

It's not stored in perpetuity, and if it's used for targeted advertising, it's aggregated and anonymised (eg, hey women's clothes retailers, 40-year-old women in Wolverhampton have been searching for luxe athleisure, if you give us ads for that sort of product, we'll serve them up to said Wolverhampton women)
