to buy house with no bathroom windows?

Finally able to buy our first place at long last, and have seen a lovely new build which ticks many boxes. Apart from the fact that neither the main bathroom or the en-suite have any windows! Didn’t even realise this was a thing. It’s an end terrace and bathrooms are on outside wall so technically having windows put in ourselves is possible but we wouldn’t have the funds for a long time for this.
Are we crazy and setting ourselves up for years of mould / damp issues? Anyone else in same situation?

I live abroad so our construction norms are a bit different. But I have four bathrooms and none of them have windows. Also I have a newbuild house (2016) in the UK where one bathroom has no windows. I don't see it as a big deal - just how much time do you spend in the bathroom anyway?

Lots of apartments don't have bathroom windows, they just have a good extractor (which I'd hope would be the case in a new build)

I'm living in my third property with a bathroom and no windows.

The first two had no extractor but also only had baths and both were fine, in fact if you like a candle lit bath it's great.

The current one has an extractor fan and it works well.

Quite common in new builds because the bathrooms tend to be in the middle of the house rather than the end. Provided you have good ventilation it shouldn’t be an issue.

As long as there is extractor fan it’s fine in that respect. The only disadvantage is you can’t keep any plants in there with no window light.

Currently in design stage of new build severely compromised Re windows - planning issues - not just privacy but also conservation area, building regs, light pollution etc. Good extractor fan a must.
As for light there are interesting (expensive though) ‘light box’ lighting panels which can work. I was very sceptical generally hating anything ‘not real/standing in for something else’ where avoidable but went to supplier before lockdown and was impressed. Haven’t gone with them - nearly did.

Also live in a new build with three bathrooms, none have windows. All have very good extractor fans and two light tones so the light can feel more natural. It’s absolutely fine - no damp, no smell of damp, light levels are fine.

The key is the extractor fan. We've been through this a few years ago. There are specs for different use cases. See here: www.plumbworld.co.uk/blog/everything-you-need-to-know-about-bathroom-ventilation

I like to have a bath with the window open so it would be a no from me.

The first house we bought was like this - 2-bed semi with the bathroom between the bedrooms, next to the stairs. The fan was great: it came on with the light and continued for a set period after the light went off. We never had a problem with damp or mould in the 8 years we were there. We put in a new light fitting with a daylight bulb so the light was never an issue either - it was much brighter and ‘truer’ than a regular warm bulb.

@devuskums sorry I can't remember which make now and boxes got chucked out. I googled ventilation fans and chose one with the highest 'cubic metres per minute' and scrupulously read the reviews. Hope this helps

I find windowless bathrooms depressing. No so bad in an en-suite.

Chihuahuacat · 10/04/2021 10:24

We viewed a house like this and didn’t put us off.

90% of hotel bathrooms don’t have a window and they’re usually lovely! As longs as it’s got ventilation you’ll be fine
