To think younger people do not appreciate their lot

I know I didn't when I was younger, but now that I am older, I most certainly do.

Some young people are managing well and having a good time. I would say that, on the whole, my 31 year old has enjoyed life so far and done quite well though Covid has put a stop to some of his work. However he has been able to diversify.

His life has been better than mine and his dad's but I don't say much about that, we all want better for our children and no doubt he will feel the same way about his if and when he has any. That's how it should be but each generation has its own struggles; currently, getting on the housing ladder is a big difficulty.

The "lot" of young people today is pretty bleak, OP. C'mon.
Independence (cannot be underestimated, absolutely glorious) was doable when I was late teens / early 20s. I left home aged 17 (early 90s), moved to a city I liked, just for fun, got a job and a room in a nice house share. Did evening classes. Enrolled at uni, worked evenings and weekends, lived my own life. No need for parental support, never even considered, because it wasn't necessary. I could support myself. Got a job related to my degree, plus weekend job, paid off student loan, did a year of travelling, saved for deposit, bought house.
Bit of a drudge, but totally doable.
There is no chance that my DC will have the same experience of independence at the same age. I've worked my whole life, but I had something tangible to show for it within a decade, knowing I had achieved it on my own with no need to rely on my parents for a penny.
The pleasure of timely independence will not be possible for my own DC.
I find it sad that saving for my DC is a necessity as opposed to a brilliant extra.
