To give dd a breadstick?

Peppery123 · 09/04/2021 17:45

25 week old (not yet 6 calendar months) grabbed breadstick from her 3 year old sister. Sucked and gnawed on it..i realised half of it had gone into jer mouth and swallowed.
Shes been irritable a few hours after and now. Im worried..was it too early? How can we tell if they are intolerant to wheat/gluten?

I really wouldn't fret too much. If you're worried about an intolerance, when you do start weaning try her on wheat/gluten and see how she goes. At under 6 months, grizzling a few hours later could literally be anything. Don't worry about it.

OverTheRainbow88 · 09/04/2021 17:47

It’s probably a coincidence. Unless allergies run in your family?

luxxlisbon · 09/04/2021 17:47

Are you worried because you haven’t given her solids yet in general or because you think she has an allergy?
6 months isn’t a set in stone thing, plus 25 weeks is basically 6 months anyway. I’m not sure I understand the problem!

eatsleepread · 09/04/2021 17:48

I love her style Grin

pepsicolagirl · 09/04/2021 17:49

it is incredibly unlikely that she has a sensitivity to gluten and 25 weeks is fine. Breadsticks are a good finger food

Peppery123 · 09/04/2021 17:54

Sorry yes Im worried because shes only ever had baby oatmeal and purees so far and I didnt think they could do BLW so soon? Is there a general rule in weeks. I thought it should be after 6 months
Thanks fir everyone's replies, I feel less panicky now.

OP posts:
Peppery123 · 09/04/2021 17:56

So can you start BLW at 25 weeks? What can I give her? Sorry I feel so out of this this time round probably due to lack of support/covid/no parental groups etc

OP posts:
MaMaD1990 · 09/04/2021 17:57

Really don't panic! 6 months is a guideline, some babies are ready earlier than others. To be fair one way of telling they're ready to wean is if they reach for food you're eating so she may even be ready to start a bit. I'm sure a few decades ago 4 months was he recommended age to wean!

Peppery123 · 09/04/2021 17:59

Thanks I just thought weaning means purees, baby oatmeal and rice. I thought they have to be at least 7 monthsnfor finger foods? Sorry im completely out of all of this. I only see finger foods in the baby sectoon '7 months+'

OP posts:
modgepodge · 09/04/2021 17:59

The fact she ate half of it with no trouble suggests it is a perfect finger food! She must be a few days off 6 months at most? Nothing magic happens to them at 6 months exactly. I think it’s fine.

SavingsQuestions · 09/04/2021 18:01

We did blw/finger food from 6 montha and didn't do purees at all...

MaMaD1990 · 09/04/2021 18:02

Not at all, it depends on what you're comfortable giving her to be honest. I started BLW with my daughter just before she turned 6 months and chucked some purees in for good measure.

HippeePrincess · 09/04/2021 18:02

It’s fine, I never did purées and my dd helped herself to my tuna Mayo sandwich while she was on my lap and ate it at a few weeks before 6 months so I figured she was ready.

Scarydinosaurs · 09/04/2021 18:03

You’ve already started weaning if you’re giving porridge and fruit.

Breadsticks are grand. Google baby led weaning- I found it very easy and much nicer than having to purée everything.

SavingsQuestions · 09/04/2021 18:03

You don't need to buy special finger foods from a baby section either - cooked veg /bits of chicked from a roast dinner on a plate. Breadsticks.... toast with cheese spread/peanut butter /etc.

AppleKatie · 09/04/2021 18:03

They can have finger foods straight away.

Anything you like really but look for low salt healthy foods.

Don’t worry about the breadstick.

Morgan12 · 09/04/2021 18:03

Aw don't worry about it at all. My DS took his brothers toast at 5 months and ate a full slice. These things aren't set in stone. Sounds like she is ready for some solids.

DareIask · 09/04/2021 18:05

30 years ago I regularly gave my youngest corned beef sandwiches for lunch at 6 months.

I know times have changed but really, don't worry.

PinkPlantCase · 09/04/2021 18:06

I’d read that for BLW if baby can sit up unassisted then they have the right level of stability/muscle tone to start

Wobbitcatcher · 09/04/2021 18:06

My daughter is 6 months next week but we have done a few days of baby led weaning. Nothing magic happens after turning 6 months. I looked at the readiness advice and she can sit up well, her tongue thrust is gone. She can grab the food and put it to her mouth. To be honest if hadn’t started she would have helped herself like yours did anyway.

I presume the 7months on packaging is to encourage you to buy more as you have new to buy each month

MrsTumbletap · 09/04/2021 18:08

I did baby-led weaning and gave my son everything from sixth months.

He was munching on toast, breadsticks, prawns, broccoli, chicken legs, everything I had he had.

He did have an egg allergy which I discovered at 8 months, (got a red rash on his face and head after eating a bit of friend egg) so just have some piraton on hand just in case they get a reaction.

Camomila · 09/04/2021 18:08

DS2s first food was a boiled carrot stick from DMs garden a few days before he turned 6 months...seemed a shame to not let him try the nice organic carrot just because he wasn't exactly 6m.

His next food was banana and he was eating chunks of baguette pretty soon afterwards.

GintyMcGinty · 09/04/2021 18:12

So can you start BLW at 25 weeks? What can I give her?

You can start when baby can sit up, pick things up and put them in her mouth. That generally happens at about 6 months. Some earlier, some later.

You can give her anything that you can eat except whole nuts and honey. Foods like grapes and cherry tomatoes should be cut up. Go easy on salt. But apart from that anything.

Any fruit, veg, salad, bread, toast, omelette, eggy bread, boiled egg slices, panni, sandwich, strips or chunks of meat, pork or lamb chops, chicken drumsticks, fish fingers, pizza, sausage, oatcake, rice cake, cheese, naan, garlic bread, pitta bread.

Both of mine ate pretty much exactly the same us unless we were having a takeaway.

TheKeatingFive · 09/04/2021 18:13

Of course it’s fine. Relax

MaMaD1990 · 09/04/2021 18:19

Anything I ate, my daughter ate, just cup up into manageable pieces (she wasn't too keen on big chunks of food). Just be careful of salt intake and nuts - I was completely paranoid about nut allergies and I remember opening up a jar of peanut butter and wafting it at her to see what happened (ridiculous, I know). You should also introduce new foods in the morning if possible so if she does have a reaction a few hours later, you can get medical help easier.
