AIBU to think the RHS didn't need to close immediately and boot everyone out as a mark of respect?

As a mark of respect to Prince Philip, the RHS have decided to close all of their gardens immediately today. Any people already inside have been herded out. Tickets are incredibly difficult to get hold of because they are so limited at the moment. There are reports on social media of families using it as a place to meet (as permitted) who haven't seen each other for a year now having to leave; no covid safe measures at the exit; traffic tailbacks as people arriving are being turned immediately away. Lots of upset and confusion.

They have also said they will close on the day of the funeral and I have no issue with this.

AIBU to think this is an ill thought through and unnecessary move? Surely there are better ways to show respect? What about respect for the visitors?

I’d be disgusted if I knew that the RHS had taken this decision. Maybe the staff thought they’d use ‘orders of the palace’ as an excuse as they were just too embarrassed to admit their organisation would act in such a callous way to its paying public? I agree they must be so out of touch if they thought people would willingly want to leave after hours of travel to sit in a revolting traffic queue (thus inconveniencing other road users who weren’t even there) to ‘mourn’ probably the most controversial current royal who had lived to nearly 100. I agree it all feels a bit North Korea.

orangegina · 10/04/2021 08:11

I find it all a bit bonkers. Nobody's seen him for three years, he was 99. He's dead to the UK anyway

We've all been expecting it. There are bigger and more important things happening to us all .

Let's mourn and remember him. For sure. Tributes are nice.

But it's al soooo OTT

Does anyone actually care (personally) that much?

orangegina · 10/04/2021 08:13

A very UN-regal tribute to pay. Silly RHS

@StoneofDestiny

Exiled as a baby in an orange box, parents divorced and mother in mental institution, older sister and family dying in plane crash, saw combat in WW2, forced to abandon career he lived to support the Queen. Yep, life absolute bed of roses

These aren't achievements!
Yep, he served in WW2 - as did millions of others did. Many millions died in WW2 and collectively they get 2 minutes silence! Millions more were maimed and scarred for life. As for 'forced to abandon his career to support his wife' - have you any idea just how many people have to do that as their partner is chronically disabled? Have you any idea how the country 'rewards' them for that 'sacrifice'?

The man was an out an out racist, an embarrassment to the country he was supposed to represent. He 'gave up his career' to live in complete luxury at taxpayers expense, able to follow his expensive hobbies at will. He was anything but housebound by his 'sacrifice' and more often than not showed utter contempt for the people and places he visited.

He died at 99 - a long life by any bodies standards. He didn't die of overwork or from going without. Let's not cover reality with propaganda.

Good post!

Wow surprised your post hasn't been deleted I've said similar and said he was hardly remark given his racist comments and hq deleted my posts!

Anyway here here to your post!

KeflavikAirport · 10/04/2021 08:30

I hope their terms and conditions make it very clear you can be booted out without notice if some old bloke carks it. I'd have been tempted to stage a sit-in.

StoneofDestiny · 10/04/2021 08:34

Well the evidence is there and I've posted a dozen or more of the direct references to what he said to prove it. Even mumsnet can't stop the provable and published facts to be read, unless they want to lose all credibility.

Brefugee · 10/04/2021 08:34

god that's awful. They should have thought "What Would Philip Want" and it probably would be for life to go on for everyone as much as possible, since he probably wasn't a monster.

MarshaBradyo · 10/04/2021 09:10

R6 still ‘sounding different’ due to PP today

Too much. Even more so after being pounded with statistics of the deaths of non royals for a year.

Gooseysgirl · 10/04/2021 09:14

So I just turned on radio 2 and it's more of the bullshit 'thoughtful and reflective' shite. Off to Virgin radio for a dose of normality.

Cuntryhouse · 10/04/2021 09:23

I know. I love my Saturday radio. Susan fucking Boyle!!! Jeez. Get a grip BBC. This is embarrassing and misjudged.

StoneofDestiny · 10/04/2021 09:33

Well, he is still dead and you are opening today RHS 🤷‍♂️.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 10/04/2021 09:34

closing the rhs, chucking people out, is disgusting, and totally inappropriate.

longwayoff · 10/04/2021 09:40

This coverage is ridiculous. Surely they won't keep this up until the funeral? Thank God for audiobooks. Many free on utube for fellow sufferers.

cyclingmad · 10/04/2021 09:45

Whats really bad is they sit in their privileged position and speak about how important mental health is, well guess what people turning up yday where doing it for some form of sanity after a year of lockdowns and staying safe as possible. Only to be turfed out.

They easily have marked and shown their respect in a different way.

QuidditchQueen · 10/04/2021 10:03

Just wondering what types of establishment will turf out punters when Andy goes.

ginandbearit · 10/04/2021 10:09

Quite enjoying R6 subdued music..anyone know of any stations that play chilled beats like this normally?
Anyway ..the wall to wall coverage and re hashing of his life could be counter productive , people happy to pay respects and acknowledge his role in the national life but ...

pigsDOfly · 10/04/2021 10:26

For anyone who has a noise sensitive dog, just seen there is going to be a 41 gun salute around the country from 12-12.40.

It doesn't actually say on the post I saw but I'm assuming it's today.

Don't know how much impact it will have generally, but for those that live near places that will do this it will, no doubt, sound like a war zone.

Not just digs either. That will trigger lots of veterans with ptsd.

The article I read showed the locations, though there were only about 5 or t places listed and all places that already do gun salutes at other times, such as The Tower of London, Edinburgh Castle, etc.
Abraxan · 10/04/2021 10:42

I think the gardens have realised their decision didn't go down well as they've posted since regarding it, not an apology but a half hearted attempt.

Reading the comments, closing wasn't necessarily the issue as much as the way it was done I think.

Even if they’d carried the visitors bags and waved them off kindly at the exit, irrelevant

It is the closing that is the issue. A much needed day out - ruined

Abraxan · 10/04/2021 10:50

I meant that that was what people were writing about on their Twitter comments, People seemed more upset by how it happened, not that it happened quite so much.

I'm not dismissing people being upset by their day being spoilt. I was simply responding about the online complaints I was reading.

I got the impression it was done rather hastily, lots of people pushed out at the last minute, all at once, not being informed about refunds and new tickets until much later in the day, etc.

pigsDOfly · 10/04/2021 10:58

tigger1001 & Abraxan

Thank you. Yes, I've just found out on the 'doghouse' that it's confined to a very few areas.

The person posting it on a forum that covers my area thought that as it's near the sea it might affect certain parts.

And yes, it's not just dogs, very many people who wont deal with it well, and, of course wildlife affected too.

I thought a 21 gun salute was the general thing; 41 seems a bit excessive.
