eBay buyer claims item arrived empty

Would it be unreasonable to refuse to refund, or even worth the hassle?
I sold a nearly empty niche perfume bottle. But I know how much was left - a good 5ml. I have sold many many nearly empty perfume bottles with no problems or complains. People buy them for different reasons- to try the perfume, to have a pretty bottle if they are collectors. I sell them cheap so it’s not like they pay good money for it.
This person just emailed me saying the bottle is empty and she wants a refund. I would say there is close to zero possibility of the perfume leaking as I had it with me in handbags and suitcases, and it’s a very sturdy bottle, very high end brand. Plus she didn’t say it has leaked.
I just think it’s so cheeky to demand a refund. I bet she’s sprayed it straight away and now got an empty bottle to ‘prove’ she is right.
I have 600+ positive feedback.
Would you refund and just forget it? It was £10 but with free postage which cost me £3.20, plus the hassle on going to the post office on Saturday. I know the amount sounds ridiculous but it’s the principle.
I really don’t want a negative feedback as it’s my little side hustle that brings extra pocket money and even one negative feedback is a big impact.

Haha sent from my phone do a different account

If you absolutely don't want negative feedback you have to refund her straight away. If Ebay see's she's had a refund, they will remove negative feedback

One negative feedback isnt going to affect you, unless you are a top rated seller. If you're not a top rated seller dont worry about it. You can reply to it.

Ebay is notorious for siding with the buyer. I would suck it up & hope karma gets her.

FightingTheFoo · 08/04/2021 13:00

I've stopped using eBay for exactly this reason - eBay always side with the buyer. I'd rather give it away for free now than go to the hassle of listing it, packing it, sending it, making 10p profit (after eBay, PayPal and posting fees) and then dealing with idiot buyers who think they're buying from ASOS or John Lewis as opposed to second hand stuff from an independent seller.

Fuck eBay. I really hope someone else comes along and replaces them.

Lovingspring · 08/04/2021 13:02

Oh sorry I see you refunded her. You could post her glitter now? If it would make you feel better

I'd switch in a heartbeat, especially since now Ebay want to make sellers responsible for the delivery service they use. Buyers can leave negative feedback if the item was lost in the post, even if you have proof of posting.

I wouldn't have refunded but its too late now. There's so many cheeky ebay buyers that lie they didn't receive the item or it is faulty. I had one that sent a photo m of the item and they had blatantly cut the lead and said it had arrived like that. I refuted their claim successfully. Its only a tenner but that's not the point.

Whammyyammy · 08/04/2021 13:08

Just agree to a refund, ebay nearly always side with the buyer and buyers know it, just saves you the hassle

Allgreyeverything · 08/04/2021 13:14

My guess is she must have thought it was a full bottle. The bottle was a frosted glass so in the first photo it might look like it’s full. But there were 5 other photos that show exactly how much was left plus a detailed description.
But yes, this makes me question is it reeeeally worth the few pounds I make on eBay if I take into consideration the effort and then the hassle of dealing with the cheeky knobs like her.

Ask her to send it back and then you will refund.

Oilpyi · 08/04/2021 13:15

Just say you’ll refund on return.
99% of chancers won’t post it back. If she does at least she’s wasted postage costs.

I have actually done this a couple of times with success.
Fucking chancers.

@Frauhubert

Thanks all fellow ebay sellers 🤗 I have refunded the money, but i am angry and sent her bad perfume karma with the refund too, may all her perfumes turn rancid, namaste
Hahaha as she slides down the bannister of life may the splinters always point her way. Namaste.
LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 08/04/2021 14:33

I have sold hundreds of items on eBay and only had two chancers. Unfortunately you will get them, they know they can get their money back from PayPal and that they have you over a barrel. Whilst most people are honest, occasionally people aren't. You will have to refund as it isn't worth letting it affect your rating. Very annoying though. Thankfully most people are nice and honest.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 08/04/2021 15:12

That's really not the point though.

I know it's not the point, but for £10 it's not worth the stress of opening up a dispute that you're more than likely going to lose. eBay pretty much always side with the buyer - and if you rely on it to make money you don't want to risk the negative feedback on your page.
