Is it a serious issue?

You can Google as well as anyone can. Why do you want to know?

It means you are aneamic basically. The underlying cause can be any number of things, but in women of menstruating age it’s usually just you need to up your iron intake.

Spinthebottle65 · 08/04/2021 00:08

Thanks both. It’s apparently not anemic because hemoglobin levels are normal.

Sometimes from an inherited haemoglobin disorder, or a trait thereof (as in a carrier of the disorder rather than a sufferer).

Especially likely if you have black/middle eastern ancestry.

It describes the size of the red blood cells.
So microcytosis means they’re smaller than the normal range.
Can be due to iron deficiency which is probably the most common reason.
But as mentioned before certain types of thalassaemia can also cause this.
So it is a description of the size of the red cells for which there are several causes

As the others have said.

I have macrocytic anaemia. Some blood cells are larger and a different shape making it difficult for them to circulate the body. Im on B12 injections because of it.

Ask your GP to test again.
