To think this is isn’t right

Ds 2yo has had a bug or another gastro issue for over a week now (early hours Tuesday morning) we’ve been managing at home but over the Easter weekend he took a dive and has since been refusing fluids.

Adoc gave suggestions that didn’t work so we ended up in a&e last night and back tonight through the pass we were given.

We had a forcible fluid challenge, literally pinning a screaming toddler down to squirt 5ml to get it spat back at me in panic, that took us to 11.30pm. When the doctor deemed him ok to go home, sound asleep and said to come back if still concerned/worsening.

Today he wouldn’t take anything again, attempted the syringe at home, lost that battle, called and told to bring him in. We’ve been trying the same here with no luck for 5 hours he’s had 1 wet nappy this morning nothing else and screams if I touch a cup.

Surely there’s something else they should be doing or trying? He’s absolutely exhausted and totally not himself.

My DD ended up in hospital just before her second birthday as she had a bad chest infection and wouldn’t drink or eat. They put a tube down her nose in order to get her to drink after a day of trying ice lollies, ice cream, jelly, milk etc. It was very distressing when they did but they managed to them get equivalent of a bottle of milk down her and she fell asleep and they came back 3 hours later to give more. She then pulled it out but it seemed to give her the kick she needed to then drink more.
I think they get into a cycle of feeling quite lethargic from being dehydrated then not wanting to drink because of this and then the cycle continuing round.

I would push for an IV of fluids.

I went through similar when my youngest was 2. Bouncing back and forth to A&E doing the f*cking until he became unresponsive and 111 sent an ambulance.

I wish I had pushed sooner on why they weren’t giving him an IV of fluids. I get not wanting to cannulate a toddler unnecessarily but it would have saved a lot of unnecessary stress and hassle for everyone involved.

Side note: we ended up getting an unsolicited apology from a Paediatric Consultant before leaving the hospital which suggests their militant fluid challenge persistence was the incorrect course of action.

That should say ‘f*cking fluid challenge’ Grin

The shift change helped us, same doc who saw him yesterday so knew us. Took nearly 8 hours but he’s got a tube in for tonight and hopefully that’ll be us on the mend.

I was dreading just being left for any longer. I haven’t had anything myself since we arrived.

I’d understand a fluid challenge if they’d monitor they’d drink after it.. Feels like if we’d stayed last night it’d already have been done. But alas, we’re getting somewhere now.

I couldn’t imagine being sent back home again there, I understand first hand how stressful the tube was just watching it but letting them get to the state they’re unresponsive is ridiculous.

Hopefully he’ll wake up tomorrow and need peeled off the ceiling as usual
