Has your grocery bill increased since covid started?

Its just my husband and I in our house. Pre-covid we got by happily on 60 a week for groceries most weeks including cleaning supplies, no alcohol. Now its 100 a week and rising.

I honestly don't know whats caused it as we're still eating out as much as ever. My husband is working from home but he used to always bring a packed lunch so that shouldn't have made too much of a difference and I'm still going out to work as normal.

Has anyone else noticed a dramatic increase in grocery bills since the pandemic started?

Good price rises are because (partly) Brexit.

I noticed the Asda toilet roll had got smaller the other day. No cheaper though. Sneaky.

Yes we spend a lot more but I don't mind as we aren't going anywhere so it balances out
I have a delivery from Sainsbury's or tesco or ASDA
I do not miss going to Aldi or Lidl
I did a click and collect at Aldi it was horrendous they literally had it in trays in flimsy bags which tore and expected you to pay £5 to load your own car
Boot, quickly like one of their staff on a checkout

I'd rather pay more and have a better experience and nicer food!

Yes me too. And like you I can’t really explain why. I am thinking we must have eaten out / got food on the go more than I realised previously. I do all the food shopping and it is a huge chore that takes too much time and mental space. It didn’t feel so difficult previously.

funnylittlefloozie · 07/04/2021 19:23

We plan the week's meals and make a shopping list every week, and with a joint or chicken for Sundays, plus wine for me, plus cleaning stuff, toiletries etc, we manage to come in under £100 every week. Thats for three greedy adults, two of whom are in quite physical jobs. We do most of our shopping at Morrisons, with the exception of bacon at the butcher (rich weeks) or Aldi (poor weeks), because Morrisons bacon is awful!

hotchocandtwosmokybacon · 07/04/2021 19:24

Yes significantly. Before Covid, noone has lunch at home and I usually skip breakfast as always rushing to work. We also used to go out to dine or brunch twice a week. Now the family is having three meals at home and lots of tea and snacks. Our grocery spending has increased so much.

Spending much more on food as not eating out and shopping at Waitrose as it seems safer
But saving so much on eating out

@shivawn

Thanks for all the replies, glad it's not just me! I wonder will it go back down when things get back to normal? I somehow doubt it.
I think it might be just you who has experienced that now and you're lucky. Most of us I think have had increased costs for a year. I actually doublechecked the date you started this thread as it's been a thing since the start of lockdown 1
caringcarer · 07/04/2021 19:36

Yes mine is higher. I can no longer have meals out as all restaurants closed atm. I used to eat out twice a week. There are very few offers as supermarkets pledged to give more food to food banks. When we get bored we tend to snack.

shivawn · 07/04/2021 20:21

@FlyingBurrito Oh it has been going on a year for us too, its just today that we had an extra expensive shop and it got me thinking about it again.

Yes a fair bit
