AIBU?
Second hand cloth nappies
Geneva1994 · 07/04/2021 13:44
Anyone on the second hand nappy groups on Facebook? I don’t know if I’m just being stingy but I joined as I can’t avoid to shell out on new cloth nappies as I’ve heard you need a lot, but people are selling 1 nappy for £20+ ? Some look ancient too.
AIBU to think you may as well just buy new?
Am I being unreasonable?

Some prints of reusable nappies seem to be quite sought after so I think they go for higher prices. Although it is considered bad form to sell a second hand nappy for more than a certain percentage of the cost of a new nappy on the group I'm part of.
If you don't care about the prints keep an eye out for people selling in bundles as that tends to be cheaper.

There are two kinds of seller: the ones who are selling highly desirable sold out prints (often to fund buying more!), and the ones who are offloading a massive bundle they no longer need.
Take your time and then pounce. We actually ended up getting ours off Gumtree - £30 for 30 nappies! Couldn't believe my luck!

You might want to check out the brands first as some nappies are more than that new..for example motherease are incredibly popular and really difficult to get a hold of.
Personally I've tried totsbots bamboozles, alva pockets, bumgenius pocket(not a common UK brand) and bambino mio all in one.
My personal preference is my alva baby pockets. We picked them up directly from alva baby and we get a much better fit than the bambino mio and because they are a Chinese brand they are really cheap to buy especially in bulk (20 for something like £79).
The cloth groups you are a part of more than likely have rules over selling them above market value and at a profit and they're quite tightly monitored by the admins so it's doubtful they are being sold at crazy prices.
Perhaps see if you can rent a newborn bundle to try out different nappies before buying?

Some prints are more desirable than others, some nappy sellers are more realistic than others.
They don't get the reputation they deserve but Bambino Mio nappies in Aldi get discounted and they definitely are worth buying new.
Also ask around. I'd probably only sell individual nappies of the ones I know people really like. But I had a whole rotation for sale, to cover postage, and No one was buying. But then a woman asked about them at a playgroup so she took them all (30 nappies) for a tenner she insisted on.

Depends on the seller and the style. There are a lot of limited edition or old prints which are no longer available, and these can be very expensive even second hand. Also the brand - wizard Uno for example are hard to get hold of and often imported so people pay a lot for them new and second hand.
Best bet is to look for a bundle either on Facebook or ebay. Tends to be cheaper and also saves postage.

I used the little lamb pockets, they were fine but I preferred every other pocket system we tried (Charlie banana, bumgenius, little and bloomz).
Resale value is really low on these too - if you see them for £3ish a nappy they are a bargain, anything else is too high imo.

Oh you would be amazed. I have seen nappies go for £80 on ebay. See image - "good used condition"
See also - scandi clothing. I've seen a second hand baby grow with bobble and stains go for £75

If you actually look at nappies there's nothing complicated about them but they are trendy among better off mums so prices are high.
It would be great to see cheap patterns to sew your own. You can buy PUL waterproof fabric to line jersey covers (you could reuse outgrown sleepsuits! And sew Terry towel boosters etc.

Actually there are quite a few sew your own patterns about.
Made by Jack's mum had a free one although the brand recently changed its name, can't remember what to. Waves and something I think.
Plus if you're on a budget terries and wraps are da bomb.

I ended up buying mostly new as the ones I wanted were too much 2nd hand. Not because I wanted new, I’m not in to fashionable prints etc. But the type I was recommended by The Nappy Lady have high re-sale price as they sell out quickly in UK (Bumgenius Elemental Joy pockets). So it was easier to go with new than hunt facebook and risk being ripped off, but I got them with 20% off in Real Nappy week.
I have managed to buy a few more second hand to boost nursery stash but they weren’t much cheaper than new (but new were completely sold out).
No regrets as they’ve been brilliant for us and fit perfectly. We have some Little Lambs pockets but they are too big in the leg for us. We also have some Baba and Boo which are beautifully made but don’t fit DD well at all so leak.
I have Totsbots Bamboozles for night time with Blueberry Capri wraps. These were also new but I could’ve got away with used.
Unfortunately it is very much trial and error as to what suits your baby and your life.
I will sell off my stash when we potty train and I should get back a good % of what we paid so that’s a bonus.

Don't even get started on slings, wraps and baby carriers! Absolute ridiculous. I know someone who absolutely obsessed with spending fortunes on second hand and new 'limited edition' baby wraps. She actually got cross when her daughter decided she hated being carried any more and wanted to walk everywhere
