This morning I placed a number of posts on my local freecycle site. The replies so far have been really abrupt not to say rude. e.g. Is this still there?. No Hello or preamble at all and NO please or thankyou. Is it the norm nowadays. When I answer any ad I always say Hello, and ask politely certainly not forgetting Please and Thankyou.

I have decided that anyone who replies rudely will not be offered my items!

I have just delisted an item on Shpock after a stupid guy kept offering me peanuts after I had already lowered the price and said that I wouldn't go any lower. Although sold an outdoor football goal to two women, who were super nice and came when they said. Also had someone on our local nextdoor site trying to sell a rabbit that he had been given on the same site a couple of days earlier, twat

Yanbu there is no need to be abrupt. I rarely get things off free cycle but saw an item I'd been after more or less new worth over £300 still in box etc....
obviously they would have had loads of replies but I sent a reply hi...explained why I'd like the item and ended" hope to hear from you. "I got the item! When it comes to free things I always explain why I need it as so many things get resold etc so being friendly etc people kind of know you are genuine maybe?

YANBU. It would never occur to me not to be polite in this situation.

I must live in a very polite village! We get, 'could I be considered please', 'is this still available, please' etc. Occasional moan about non show ups, but most people are fine. Bit of a cafuffle recently with complaints of the same people taking things, which is being monitored, but we get new kettles, working treadmills, TVs, new clothing, nice handbags and everything is snapped up!

notagainmummy · 08/04/2021 10:18

Our is limited to our village and people living there only

@FuckyouCovid21 Sorry, for the loss of your dad ☹️. I had a similar thing when I sold my mountain bike. I barely used it, also helmet, pump, and pristine condition. A man and his student son came and the son queried why it squeaked. Dad told him it was because it was barely used and still new. Son asked if I would drop the price from the £50 I wanted. I hesitated, and the dad said, shut up and pay, you should be ripping your arm off for this!

Yesitsbess · 08/04/2021 11:58

I've sent this message many a time just because if I take the time to format a longish polite message the damned thing has been snapped up already! I do make conversation about why I'd like it etc if I get a reply though :)

I must say, I do often email people who have marked things collection only to ask if they are sure they can't post it, especially if it's been up there for a while. I do sometimes find people have either ticked a box by accident or have changed their minds. Not for anything awkward or enormous, but for example someone selling a couple of boys tops. I make it clear I'm not in a rush and I'm just double checking. I don't think it's an unreasonable message to send and I've always had nice replies.
